Rendering is very similar to plastering and is a job that requires some skill and plenty of practice. Despite this it’s certainly something that you can learn to do. Read on to find out how to render walls and everything else you’ll need to know. A Note on Mixing Render Wet dash render is not the same as pebbledash. With pebbledash, the cement render is applied first and then small pebbles are thrown onto the wall. Whereas with wet dash render, the small pieces of gravel are mixed in with the sand and cement mix and it is all applied together. This gives a very different finish. With pebbledash, the final finish is the exposed stones themselves, but with wet dash render, the stones aren't visible. What this means is that the wet dash render can be painted and updated whenever you want (pebble dash can't be painted).
The correct ratio of mix to use for render is a 5:2:1 mix for both coats however they differ slightly over the 2 coats in that for the top coat you would use more soft sand than sharp sand so that you can get a smoother finish. The ratios for both coats are as follows: Sand the surface –once the filler is dry, use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface and remove any rough edges. Adding Insulation When Rendering Some professional plasterers/renderers may choose not to use these as they can achieve a sharp corner without them. On the whole most renders, despite any clay-based renders are rather damaging to the environment, especially the plastic-based offerings. With today’s focus on looking after the environment there are other options available such as cork-based render and others so it’s well worth exploring these options also.Corner Tools: Corner tools, such as corner trowels or corner floats, are essential for finishing the corners of walls neatly and precisely. Follow recommended ratios to achieve the correct consistency when mixing sand and cement. Avoid excessively dry or wet mixes.Spirit Level: A spirit level helps ensure that your render is applied evenly and that walls are plumb and level. Despite the above, some professional plasterers will start applying their second coat after only an hour or so. Depending on the drying conditions and after years of experience they will know when it’s safe to do so. We suggest leaving it for 24 hours as you wont have the same levels of experience at this stage.
Lime does the same job as cement in that it holds the particles of sand together while setting (albeit much more slowly) but its real value is that it allows any moisture trapped in the surface of the building to evaporate out.Plastic Sheeting or Drop Cloths: To protect the surrounding area from render splashes and spills, lay down plastic sheeting or drop cloths.
Rendering can be a messy job and although it’s outside you may still have objects and surfaces that are delicate and need protecting such as Indian Sandstone paving slabs or the similar. Ensure you have all your protective gear on, including steel-cut boots, a respiratory mask, protective gloves, and earmuffs. Caulking Gun: If you need to fill gaps or joints, a caulking gun can be helpful for applying caulking or sealant. Floating has the effect of closing up the render. All the little air holes are filled and the render becomes smoother and more waterproof. Apply the render in thin, even coats, working it into the surface. Use a straight edge for leveling and air bubble removal.
Rendering and the Building Regulations
Scaffolding or Ladders: Depending on the height of the wall, you may need scaffolding or ladders to reach higher areas safely. This evaporation is called “breathing” so when you hear the phrase “The walls must be allowed to breathe” this is what it means. Although correctly applied render is fairly waterproof in its own right, it can be a little dull to look at so many choose to increase the visual appeal of render plus make it more water resistant by painting it. my plasterer said he was busy on a job, so I left it untill the spread could come and scratch it.A week after we applied it and it had dried, it started to rain, and the renderers stabelizing primer went from dark grey to a light grey.I thought it a bit strange, so I went up and rubbed my hand over it and noticed that the primer had gone soft and rubber like and could be scratched off with my finger nail.
