There have been rumblings for the past few years of a pending Blu-ray release of The Kindred, finally freeing it from its trapped-on-VHS status, but as of now it remains a relatively obscure ’80s creature feature. Time and a vocal fanbase have elevated the endeavor to cult status, celebrating its schlocky appeal and ferocious monsters, but there's really nothing to "The Deadly Spawn" beyond some ingenious special effects and a few formidable visits to the gore zone. Where they had been genuine threats—as far as the public was concerned—in the ‘50s, extraterrestrials were now becoming the stuff of action and adventure stories. At its most ubiquitous of definitions, the creature feature is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role; the term says it all.

It conquered whatever leftover fears of extraterrestrial threats the public had by turning the very idea of them into a merchandising empire. It’s impressive in its ambition, especially for a group of amateur filmmakers, and has long since developed a significant cult following. Yet these people almost always mention how much the feature terrified them the first time they saw it. With the people in the house now becoming the entrees of an intergalactic monster buffet, a group of teenagers, led by a small boy, decide to take this matter into their own hands to stop the aliens from reproducing and rid the world of THE DEADLY SPAWN once and for all!Maybe it was the cold war fears that kept sci-fi creature features around, but that can’t be the only reason this niche sub-genre has all but disappeared. He also works on other magazines, including Monster Bash, Horror Biz, Monster Mania and Monsterpalooza. It winds up in the sewer, the precise spot being used as a dumping ground for growth hormones and waste by a local laboratory. The meteorite soon crashes down pretty close to their campsite, which puts an end to the festivities. His intentions are endearing, but his moviemaking inexperience is ruthlessly underlined throughout the picture.
