Disillusioned by modern recording techniques following 1990’s flat all-stars workout Under The Red Sky, the Minnesota-born legend’s creative energies were gradually regenerated by the extensive trawl through traditional Blues and folk songs (a crucial formative inspiration for Dylan’s songwriting) executed on the starkly solo acoustic Good As I Been to You (1992) and 1993’s World Gone Wrong. The original versions of what is now, for me, since listening to them, Dylan's best album. AUK Shortcuts October 2023: Shaw’s Trailer Park, Thom Morecroft, Luluc, Sofia Talvik, Rachel Sermanni, John Douglas, Sunset Stranger, Meredith Lane and Tom Carlson Disc 5 includes 12 further outtakes and live versions previously included on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 so will already feature in many Dylan collections. These are no doubt included here to make this a complete collection of recordings taken from this period. One particular highlight here is the highly energised, almost incendiary live version of Cold Irons Bound from the Bonnaroo Festival in June 2004 and, based on this performance, I can only wonder how good it would be to get this full show officially released at some point in the future.Browne, David (January 25, 2023). On November 1, 2022, Simon & Schuster published The Philosophy of Modern Song, Bob Dylan’s first book of new writing since 2004’s Chronicles: Volume One — and since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. Not Dark Yet is a centre point of the album and regarded by so many fans, including myself, as one of his finest songs, and the two further versions included here are undoubtedly absolute highlights. The first is a much more upbeat version, which is great but not really in keeping with the vibe of the song, and the other aligned more with the dark and sombre feel of the album version. But, having said that, neither comes close to the superior version on the album. In early 1996, Dylan, who had not released an album of original compositions since the 1990 LP Under The Red Sky, began working on new songs. From August to October, he went to Teatro Studio in Oxnard/CA with Daniel Lanois, who had produced his 1989 album Oh Mercy, to record demos for a possible new LP

At their best, the results offer glimpses of equally thrilling alternative directions the album could have headed in – one early variant of “Can’t Wait” carries a distinctive whiff of dank, juicy New Orleans variant of funk, while another piano-led variant is pure passionate gospel steaminess. Yet another version, a hoped-up live one, gallops with an exuberant energy that is deliciously at odds with the heartbroken frustration of the lyrics.
