BR>Dick Van Dyke is charming as a daydreaming inventor who fixes up an old jalopy and, with the vivid imaginations of his two children Jeremy and Jemima, and a lady friend Truly Scrumptious, it is transformed into a flying, floating wonder car that carries them to a magical kingdom where they must endure the child catcher at first hand and save the kingdom's children from imprisonment.This is especially a problem because he is the widowed father of two children, and he also looks after his doddering father.

The result is a rather epic tale that, amazingly, continues to be a favourite with children, in spite of its near 2 and ½ hour length (a piddle break at 85 minutes helps). When inventor Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) acquires a run-down racing car and renovates it for his children, Jeremy and Jemima, he makes a few extra improvements. As it is to be expected the sound reproduction is magnificent in 7-1 Theatre Surround and the clarity and sharpness of picutre is almost perfect.In the year 1909 [7]in rural England, Jemima and Jeremy, the two young children of widowed unsuccessful inventor Caractacus Potts, become enthralled by the wreck of a champion racecar. Throw in a prim and proper female lead and two children (all from England), and the comparisons to Disney's 1964 classic are inevitable. The lady who played lead is in her first and I believe last role on screen which is a shame as she had a presence on . One of his inventions, a candy that whistles, throws him into the acquaintance of Truly Scrumptious, the daughter of a candy maker. The Vulgarian adults storm the castle, while Caractacus, Truly, and the Toymaker free Jemima and Jeremy.

Time began its review by stating the film is a "picture for the ages—the ages between five and twelve", and ended by noting that "At a time when violence and sex are the dual sellers at the box office, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang looks better than it is simply because it's not not all all bad bad. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is fairly well-known among film fans, and that's about the level of success it deserves. It not only drives - but also flies and floats - as it leads him, his two children and his beautiful lady friend, Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), into a magical world of pirates, castles and endless adventure.
