About this deal

Find your “molds”.The “skirt” of the cake is baked in one or two 8″ cake pans and an oven-safe glass bowl (or two glass bowls, one medium-sized and one small sized). That’s all you’ll need for the base of the cake, or the skirt. Get creative with what you have. Just make sure the bowls you are using are oven safe. A ceramic or stoneware mixing bowl will work great. The size of cake will fit any Barbie-size princess doll or Barbie doll. I’ve seen some amazing characters created for cakes – most made out of fondant. They are truly works of art! But few can sculpt these beauties for their own cakes made at home. So for this cake, I used a toddler doll version of Rapunzel, which I bought at my local Walmart. It even came with her adorable little chameleon friend Pascal!! This helped create an amazing cake for a 3 year old, and she can have the doll and toy to play with later! For this cake, I also divided my frosting into a large bowl and small bowl. The small bowl with lighter purple was for her sleeves, some of the bodice and the inside of her skirt. I used Duff’s (love Duff!) Color Gels.

Put the bottom layer of your cake on the serving platter or cake stand that you will use. Slip some parchment paper a few inches wide (or waxed paper) under the edges of your cake about ¼ in. You’re going to pull these out after you’ve decorated it and it will give you a clean plate and smooth edges. Also if you are planning streamers, table setup, etc, for an outdoor party…rethink that! Even a little wind ruins a nice table setting…I had an elaborate table design for each table planned and the wind just made it completely impossible! So…be aware of that! I filled my squishy cake decorating tubes with frosting and put the princess dress that was my pattern, next to me on the counter. I started with the inside fold of her skirt and used a spatula with the lighter frosting to create the triangle. I covered the rest of the cake with the darker color. You can also use our homemade cake mix recipe if you don’t want to use store-bought. This easy recipe just uses cake flour (or all purpose flour), sugar, baking powder, salt, and shortening. Add eggs, milk, and butter to the mixture to make your cake batter. I did, and they were a little on the dhry side. I think I might have impressed myself with this one. At least at 2 a.m. when I finished up, I thought it might be my best culinary masterpiece to date. I used this cake pan 2 times already. Both were with Barbie dolls. The cake was chocolate. I never use box mixes since I do not like the taste. I found that I had to bake my usual recipe15 min longer than usual. I used Magnolia Bakery’s Chocolate Birthday Cake recipe. (it is enough for a 9″ three layer cake and fills the wonder mold pan perfectly.) Since it is such a moist cake it didn”t dry out as much when I baked it longer.

Use gel food coloring from the craft store. These types of food coloring are far superior to the water food coloring at the grocery story. You will get brighter colors and the perfect tint to match your princess. The cake itself, has 5 thin layers of vanilla cake, 3 – 8″ layers, and 1 – 6″ cake sliced in half. For these, I used my favorite Golden Vanilla cake mix from King Arthur Flour. Rapunzel’s underskirt has a lot of detailing in it so I decided to roll the fondant out onto an impression mat and then used that to cover the cake! As you cover a cake the fondant tends to stretch a bit so to keep the details I just focused on keeping one section pretty, the rest I didn’t mind if the impression got stretched and warped. Freeze and frost.I usually like to wrap the whole cake in plastic wrap and pop it in the freezer overnight after it has cooled. This makes it so much easier to frost later on. Insert doll into the top of the cake (you may want to use a knife to cut a hole the width of the Barbie doll if it is still fairly frozen) and decorate Easy project, Fast (my nearly 4 year old and I made it together. We laid out all the yarn across the house and made a giant braid, then added some flowers…) I had to overcome a few structural issues in constructing this cake. First of all, I had to secure a long wooden skewer to the doll, under her dress. This would be inserted deep into the cake (about 3″), so I wouldn’t have to worry about the doll tipping over! I secured it with 2 zip ties, TIGHTLY under the dress.
