About this deal

The gum itself is made using a “carefully selected” recipe which includes eight naturally-derived ingredients: sapodilla tree chicle sap, natural flavours, xylitol, stevia, gum arabic, vegetable glycerine, magnesium stearate and ethically and sustainably sourced carnauba wax.

Whether disposed of responsibly or not, the plastic element of the product means there can be no positive outcome for the environment. If disposed of in a bin, the plastic will either be incinerated or sent to landfill where it will remain and will not decompose,” says the company. Milliways’range of four flavours are 100% biodegradable and made using naturally derived and sustainably sourced ingredients We’re at a monumental moment in the sector where brands like ours have a voice and a real opportunity to scale effectively. I truly believe we’re just getting started.”

KLT CEO Brad Kark said: “We are truly excited about our partnership with Milliways as they make significant progress in developing a world-class product, strong team and unique brand.

While maintaining sustainability throughout our supply chain, we also need to deliver absolute quality and adhere to food safety standards,” says Raviv. Milliways CEO and founder, Tom Raviv, said: “It was important for us to build on the existing brand identity we’ve established whilst pushing the brand and designs to the next level to make Milliways recognisable to everyone, everywhere. Unhappy with what was on offer, Raviv looked for a solution to curb the ongoing plastic-based gum pollution. Enter Milliways. Feb 2022 --- UK-based chewing gum brand Milliways is calling for a change in government policy that would reduce single-use plastic pollution and educate consumers about the potentially harmful ingredients used in mainstream gum brands. We’re always thinking about the future and how our products can shape it, so we wanted to incorporate aspirational ‘futuristic’ hues into the designs, whilst still paying homage to the natural and sustainable ingredients we use in our chewing gum. It was also essential that we highlighted our plastic-free ingredients to differentiate Milliways from big gum brands that use petroleum-derived plastics in their recipe. The result is a biodegradable product which typically takes between five to 12 months to break down. The actual rate of gum decomposition depends on various factors; most importantly where the gum is disposed. Ultimately though, Raviv sees Milliways recent successes as a significant moment for plastic-free brands in general, as they continue to grow in both prominence and market share. Frequent meetings help us align with our suppliers, push R&D boundaries, and maintain a high-quality supply chain,” he says.

While Raviv and the team at Milliways are trying to be as plastic-free as possible throughout the supply chain, it’s not always possible, with certain safety standards – such as the use of disposable plastic gloves – almost impossible to avoid. Raviv said he wanted to continue educating shoppers that conventional gum could contain the same amount of plastic as a drinks straw. Milliways said these ingredients made the gum biodegradable and healthier to consume than traditional gum.Chicle comes from Central America and makes our gum chewy and gives us the sort of chewing gum texture that people are used to.” Founded and launched in 2021, Raviv’s motivations behind creating Milliways was to offer a product that was plastic-free, plant-based and health-friendly but still “unique and delicious”– and maintaining the same taste characteristics as conventional chewing gum. Jamie Cullen, designer at Analogue said: “When we set out to refresh the Milliways brand there were two key things we looked to achieve: simplifying the brand logo into something iconic and instantly recognisable and streamlining the visual aesthetic to create a more coherent brand story.” We launched a product that is highly social and impulsive during the height of the pandemic. We worked hard to win listings with retailers, which have had limited optionality given the concentration of a few mega brands dominating the category for decades. Unfortunately, we can’t solve the entire plastic problem just yet – but we’re starting with one piece of gum at a time.” Making plastic-free gum the norm Milliways gum VS typical gum
