About this deal

No generations-old families inbreeding their sons and daughters to cling to the ladder of prestige, power, and aristocracy. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. Thirty-one year old Merritt Fernsby, who is estranged from his family since more than a decade, gets a shock when he learns that his grandmother has left him a remote estate named Whimbrel House. But never fear, thirty four year old Hulda Larkin, of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms (BIKES), arrives to save Merritt from his enchanted house.

Amanda Leigh Cobb brings in Hulda, an employee from the Boston Institute of Keepers of Enchanted Rooms, who seems to be a stern young woman, at first. There are lots of 5 star reviews for this book so clearly very popular, so perhaps it just isn't right for me.

We don't get too much back story to the characters until the latter part of the novel and so end up with strangers watching them react to things. If you are hard-core about your horror, you will probably find this too lightweight for your tastes.

An author who is currently working on his second book, he is thrilled to realize that this might solve his current housing predicament. If I had read this at some other time of the year, I am sure I would have binge-read it from start to end.

She is a tamer of possessed and enchanted houses and sees it as her duty to preserve the disappearing magic in such ancient houses. This book ended up on my list of favorite books I’ve read in 2022, and it's near the very top of that list. But things are not so easy, Whimbrel House isn't like others, some things are in the shadows buried, hidden and they are all in danger! As both of them are in their thirties, it is funny to see them so clumsy and almost juvenile around each other, but the author has written the reasons for this so well that it doesn’t jar.

I won’t even get into my favorite character, Owein, who stole the show and is sure to steal your heart as well. At first I started to get bogged down with the talk of magic spells and related genealogy but as I became more invested in the characters, I seemed to understand those things better. The moment I read what it was about I knew I was going to love it, but I didn't think I’d enjoy it quite this much.Holmgren succeeded in breaking this curse with her imaginative, creative story about a magical house and the enchanting, magical characters attempting to live somewhat normal lives inside its walls. While some elements of magic have been handled with care, a few seem to be left without much attention. We also use them to help detect unauthorized access or activity that violate our terms of service, as well as to analyze site traffic and performance for our own site improvement efforts. There is one line about how one servant (who never has a physical description) doesn't want to visit the South.

The main plot arc takes some meandering twists and turns, slowly revealing the horror of the identity of the villain and his nefarious ambitions, but ultimately comes to an exciting climax and conclusion. This is a time for Hulda Larkin from the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms to come to help and take care of the new resident or perhaps Whimbrel House itself! However, they both soon realise that their residence has far more secrets than they initially assumed, and the dangers to them might not come from the house alone. The beginning may remind you of Beauty and the Beast (Disney), or, with a more literary nod The House with Chicken Legs (Anderson). And despite a seemingly vast world, she insists on telling stories that are very similar at their core. The ending left me happy, but also a little bereft thinking I would have to say goodbye to everyone at Whimbrel House.
