About this deal

Nitecore has a serious lineup of headlamps, including some L-shape (or right-angle) lamps. But today we’re reviewing the HC65 v2, which is the second version of the HC65. The original HC65 used a CREE XM-L2 LED with a total of 1000 lumens and 3,000 cd. And the HC65 v2 was upgraded to a Luminus SST40 LED with a max output of 1750 lumens and 7,000 cd. That’s definitely an upgrade. Offering three light sources, three special modes and five brightness levels, the HC65 V2 ensures there is a lighting output to meet your requirements. All outputs are operated by a single button on the top of the light for fast, intuitive activation. The power button also has a built-in power indicator which will flash to show the battery voltage. The Nitecore HC65 V2 moved from the CREE XML2 to the Luminus SST40 LED. This is a pretty popular LED that you see in many flashlights these days. Moving from the CREE to the Luminus is a nice upgrade. Like most Nitecore products, my HC65 V2 came with a cool white LED.Although the SST40-W is available in 5000K, 5700K, and 6500K. With 3 different LEDs and having “throw” and “flood” on the same headlamp, this is by far one of the most versatile headlamp available. Plus the included 18650 and Micro-USB charging allow for a complete headlamp setup. Although the UI might seem a little intimidating at first, after the inital learning curve, it becomes rather straightforward to use. The main beam has a rather distinct hotspot with some slight corona and a rather wide usable (almost circular) spill. It also helps that the XM-L2 led is perfectly centred in this sample. There is a slight ring in the main beam when whitewall hunting but is not visible in real world usage.

High started at 962 lumens and slowly declined in output to 872 lumens at 10 minutes when it dropped rapidly till it reached about 550 lumens, and slowly increased to about 570 lumens. At the 2 hours-26minutes mark, it dropped to 255 lumens. And at 2 hours-34minutes it dropped even further, to 51 lumens. After 3 hours and 24 minutes, it dropped to 1 lumen. It continued running for many hours. (Specs: 2h 15min) Excellent product very satisfied with it wouldn’t expect any different have quite a few products from Nitecore For Amp readings, I use a Fluke 77III DM, and the readings are taken at turn on. For higher amps, I now use a Fluke 325 True RMS clamp meter. For microamps, I use a cheap DMM with an easy-to-use micro amp setting. Mode spacing appears to be progressively brighter to the eye and the modes are well spaced enough to be able to know which mode one is currently in. With that in mind, TLR tend to view mode spacing as battery life indicators (amount of runtime left) rather than the specific output (lumens). Hands down the best headlamp out there. All the different modes, ease of use, long lasting and takes the worst weather you can throw at it. I wear mine snowshoeing in the mountains in blizzard like conditions and I can always rely upon my HC65!Some pictures have been adjusted slightly to depict as close as to what is seen in real life. The distance of the light from the door is 4.6m.

The battery that comes with it is much bigger than your run of the mill AA Duracell. It’s a removable and rechargeable Nitecore NL1834 3400mAh protected cell though you can actually use any 18650 battery with this or you could use 2 x CR123 or RCR123 batteries. In other words, it can run off batteries that you’ll find in most supermarkets. There is also a white auxiliary LED that has a high colour rendering index (CRI ≥ 90), a colour temperature of 4500 K and provides an output of 35 lumens. The high CRI means the beam resembles that of morning sunlight, making colours appear more clearly to the human eye and also reducing eye strain, which makes this mode perfect for night reading. The colour temperature refers to the colour of the beam, which is a neutral to warm light. The Nitecore HC65 V2 is a rechargeable LED head torch offering triple light sources that include a main white LED output as well as an auxiliary white light and a red light output. All of the beamshots taken below are done so with the following camera settings (MOONLIGHT: 2.5, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB, LOW: 0.5, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB, MID, HIGH & TURBO: 1/4, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB, Auxiliary White Light (High CRI) & RED light: 0.6, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB).

You might confuse the product name with the Nitecore HC60 v2 we reviewed earlier, but this is a different kind of flashlight. The HC60 has only 1 LED, and not red or AUX LEDs like the HC65 V2. So the HC65 v2 looks like an ‘upgraded’ version of the HC60 with multiple LEDs and features. All outputs are operated by a single button on the top of the light for fast, intuitive activation. The power button also has a built-in power indicator which will flash to show the battery voltage.
