If I like the writing experience, I may eventually get the non-Chinese pen. Capless’ design makes it my ideal daily, on the go pen, and I don’t see myself going to another pen anytime soon for that use so I was actually somewhat relieved that I could get an A1 and won’t be too bothered if it’s lost or damaged. Thanks for your thoughtful discussion on the ethics on copying. In this specific case, I remember reading somewhere that Pilot had patents on the VP design, which have expired fairly recently. This is why for a long time since its release in the 60’s VP was unique in the market.

There really isn't many differences other than weight and the "body band" that has the Moonman logo instead of the two rounded rings that the Pilot alternative uses. Everything else is very similar if not identical. I have several Moonman pens, and they all write nicely right out of the box. I haven't had any fall apart or be just horrible. To be clear, I do not condone design theft. If there was a factory out there turning out injection molded copies of Franklin-Christoph or Schon DSGN pens I would be of a different mind. But, as with all things mankind has observed, Brands exist on a spectrum. The thing about Pilot is that they aren’t a mom ‘n pop pen maker. Yes, they have artisans and creators making beautiful pieces under the Namiki brand. They also sell enough G2s in a year to buy out every pen at every table at any given pen show. When it comes to the greater economy of pens, Pilot is The Man TM. What the A1 and A2 have done is demonstrated that the pens that have cornered a segment of the market can be produced and made available for a much lower price. Alignment was not hot, I had to manually align the nib tines. They weren't terrible, but the alignment was clear the minute you stoked from left to right. Whereas I'd be happy for the pens to be clearly, or even prominently, branded Majohn instead of Moonman on the exterior. A name is just a name, and quite frankly neither of those sounds classier than each other.
