About this deal

AB-Inbev launched this non-alcoholic 0% version ofHoegaarden in 2019, distributing it in countries including the UK, India and the USA. Ingredients

A decade or so ago, Hoegaarden wheat beer was my tipple of choice. Bursting with flavour and very different from the standard bitters and lagers I was previously drinking, it would sometimes confuse my fellow drinkers. “Why are you drinking that banana beer?”, I would get asked as I was lifting a hexagonal glass to my lips. The taste was certainly one that took a while to get used to, but opened me up to a world of wheat beers that previously I didn’t know about. Yet by the 1950s, all the breweries had closed. Then Pierre Celis, a local man who had helped out at one of the last breweries to shut its doors, set up a small brewery inHoegaarden producing beers to the traditional recipe. Served with a slice of lemon in a hexagonal glass, this white beer made with coriander and orange peel felt to me like the ultimate in beer sophistication. And compared to usual tipple (Foster’s, Carling), this was probably true. There’s little sign of the more intense lemon, orange and other citrusy flavours found in the originalHoegaarden

The original recipe forHoegaarden was conceived in the middle ages and there were soon more than 30 breweries in the village after which the beer takes its name. Celis left the brewery in the late 80s. So by the time I was drinking it in the early 2000s, his influence on the production had all but disappeared. Lemon Aspen Pilsner from @SobahBeverages . Citrus on the nose, orange marmalade, malts. Citrus when we taste too, but it's more earthy and floral than your traditional citrus fruit. Works well in the lager free-beer.co.uk/sobah-lemon-… @FreeBeer_UK - Nov 10The flavouring, citric acid and apple extract don’t seem to feature in the full-strength version. Calories, carbs and sugar It’s very lightly carbonated and has lost almost all its fizz by the time it settles in your glass. The medium body’s good enough but it has a syrupy texture that leaves an unwanted film in your mouth after each sip.

It has the Hoegaarden flavours I remember, but slightly different, almost as if watered down with lemonade as I alluded to before. This is certainly not a bad thing in my opinion, and though it may be a bit carby, Hoegaarden Wit Blanche 0.0 will be on my shopping list in the future. Buy Hoegaarden Wit Blanche 0.0 It’s high in carbs and sugar with 7.4g of carbs per 100ml, of which 3.7g is sugar. Flavours, appearance and mouthfeel Svart/Hvit from @nogneo . Treacle, coffee, roasted malts and vanilla on the nose, restrained bitterness with more roasted grains, coffee and a slight caramel sweetness as we taste. Lovely hefty body. Could easily pass for a full-fat stout free-beer.co.uk/nogne-o-svar… #alcoholfree @FreeBeer_UK - Sep 5
