Contrary to what casual audiences might think, Lightyear will not be about the same Buzz Lightyear toy that audiences have followed since Toy Story's release in 1995. Instead, Pixar's newest film will opt for a meta approach by telling the story of the fictional Space Ranger that would eventually inspire the line of Buzz Lightyear toys in the Toy Story universe. That is why Buzz looks and sounds so different from the Tim Allen version. Even still, the appearance of what appears to be a redesigned Emporer Zurg in the trailer reveals that at least some elements of the toy’s mythology—also known as the text behind the box—will be incorporated into Lightyear. But the thing that made Sox so fun and special is that he clearly has a personality. At one point, Sox makes it clear that even he thinks he has made a mistake when it comes to being at Buzz’s side as he tells him,
But that moment was not the only scene stealer for Sox, as he also helped to close out the trailer by offering to help Buzz fall asleep with a wide range of sound effects. And while Buzz chooses white noise, the two say good night to each other before the robotic cat opens his mouth to give him the white noise he requested. It was weird and wonderful all in one moment. Well, technically Sox is the “personal companion robot” for Buzz. He is the one getting to travel with Buzz and keep him company. On February 8, Pixar dropped a full Lightyear trailer that is giving us a much better look at what we can expect from this Toy Story origin story. And while the focus should be on Buzz Lightyear (of course), for us it was all about Sox. Contrary to people's expectations, this is not the first time Buzz is played by an actor other than Tim Allen.
