About this deal

The story ends in spring, in contrast with the naming of ‘Autumn street’. An entire year has passed, showing that this is a circular, feminine plot shape. It is common for books starring girls to follow the seasons. Speaking of taking things to the next level, Sienna Blake and Ethan Williams plough ahead with their plot to swindle Rafe Harcourt out of his cash. Lois Lowry certainly knows how to weave a believable fictional story. Set during WWII, a young girl named Elizabeth unwillingly goes to live in her grandfather's house, along with her sister and mother. Elizabeth's father is sent off to serve in the war during this time, though that is not the focus of the book. Rafe, however, isn’t like anyone Sienna has encountered thus far and he most certainly has his wits about him, so it would be foolish of her to underestimate him, especially with sister Dilly in his ear.

Between 1981 and 1984 (apart from a year’s reprieve in France, and a term at home when I had Hepatitis B - there’s two other stories right there) I lived within the same square mile of Leeds 6, and gave myself up to the heart of the student Shangri-la that revolved around The Royal Park pub and Maumomiat International Superstore. I lived in a series of houses that have subsequently blurred into one generic student house, with their fan heaters and filthy toilets. I trod water among an ebb and flow of people who had little in common except circumstance. Mostly I kept my eyes on the horizon and trudged dully onwards. My fellow students had lives that were unfathomable to me. They studied subjects I had never heard of, and they threw up with dismal regularity on a Sunday morning in the freezing bathrooms that always seemed to be next to my bedroom. Not to mention, mother-in-law and deadly enemy Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and daughter Lucy’s murderer Bobby (Clay Milner Russell) will surely not take too kindly to her return. Can we expect a fair few fights in the not-so-distant future? For Scotland, 2011 data is shown (update coming soon, the Scottish census was delayed by a year unlike the rest of the UK). Poor Bob (Tony Audenshaw) thought he was living a comfortable and happy life with Wendy, only to have everything thrown up in the air. Autumn Street is a perfect example. The basic plot could be understood by children, but there are so many layers to the story I believe would be lost on them. So, who is Lois Lowry's primary audience?

The ITV soap is yet to confirm Stephen's exit from the soap, and details on what leads to the possible exit are also being kept under wraps. But this could be the moment the serial killer is finally exposed to the street. Ryan spirals Courtesy of Alexander McQueen; Courtesy of Ann Demeulemeester; Courtesy of Givenchy; Courtesy of Versace In this quiet chapter Liz realises a few things. She understands that the aunties are her real grandmother’s sisters. She learns what romantic love looks like (a little) and declares to her mother that she loves Charles. This again touches on the racial divide of that era when Liz’s mother says that things don’t always work out. CHAPTER FIFTEEN A few weeks ago, Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) left the cobbles with her daughter Cassie (Claire Sweeney) after she overdosed on drugs and ended up in hospital. We know that Cassie is Tyrone’s (Alan Halsall) biological mother and with both characters set to return soon, Evelyn will have to deal with the small matter of Tyrone learning his mum has been alive this entire time.

I have no love for where I grew up. It was suburban and stifling, and it taught me nothing except I didn’t want to be there. I got out as soon as I could, legitimising my escape with good A level results. I had few criteria for my choice of University, except it had to be a long way from home and it had to be in a proper city.Liz feels that she was a little responsible for Noah’s death, wishing harm upon him, planning to gently stab him with that knife. Charles and Liz do the only thing they can think of to make amends, and that is to bury the knife the same way Noah was buried. Grandmother’s suggestion is to go to Confession, but Liz has a touch and go relationship with God. This is interesting as a reveal because the narrator writes this with the benefit of hindsight, and could easily have written Grandmother more sympathetically from the start.

Liz focuses on the double meaning of ‘stroke’. There’s the medical condition, then there’s the ‘stroke’ of midnight. Liz associates death with the passing of time. Death (and life) is starting to take shape for her. She is slowly learning that everything must end. She has already learnt that children can die at any time. Now her beloved grandfather is severely compromised, restricted to a wheelchair. Maxi hemlines have been a key trend this season and one that we think will really resonate with the Browns customer," shares Gramston. "We've seen both new-gen and super-brand designers move away from micro lengths to a more refined evening look, pairing fitted maxi-length dresses and skirts with floor-sweeping, tailored outerwear. Alaïa's rich chocolate-brown interpretation, the sheer long dresses from Blumarine and Nensi Dojaka and Diesel's double-denim-skirt-and-long-coat combination were some of our favourite exaggerated silhouettes from the runway." Charles has been killed by Ferdie Gossett, ‘himself a victim’. The message here: Even those who kill have been somehow damaged themselves. There's a whole lot of sweetness in the story, because Charles is really fun to be around and his friendship with Elizabeth is really funny and nice, even their annoying squabbles and competitions. Of course, in the end, something really horrible happens. It wasn't what I expected, though. When Charles is murdered, it is an awful, random crime. And at first, I felt like this didn't make sense. Shouldn't this death mean something? Shouldn't this have been done out of hatred, or because of his circumstances? But after a minute I realized how immature it was to expect that from a story. In a way, tragic injustice can be used to make you feel better about a narrative: as if to say, if we aren't racist, if we aren't in poverty, none of this should happen. It's easier to dismiss. In the story, it's especially amazing that this is immediately preceded by a scene of bullying and racism… which is completely unrelated to what ultimately happens. (The cover art, augh!!) It's really just another painful edge of the horrible day. This whole event, combined with Elizabeth's wild illness that follows it, makes for such a moving and memorable ending. What a sweet, delightful, well-written book. I don't know that I remember any other author being able to capture so perfectly what it is like to be in the head of a child. She remembers exactly how it felt to overhear adult conversations and make incorrect assumptions; constructions of your world, based on what you heard. She remembers what it is like to take on the heavy guilt of thinking you're responsible for someone's death, when you're not. She remembers what it is like to be filled with desires, emotions, wants, and not know how to express them appropriately.Sienna is desperate to get a ring on the Earl’s finger, but first she must convince him that she’s got his best interests at heart, which shouldn’t be too difficult given just how besotted he is with her. Could we have another week as deadly as the sinkhole disaster and return of Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor)?
