About this deal

It was fun, I'm glad I read it. I love how Christina Henry's mind works, but this isn't my favorite of her books.

Tad asked me to meet him there,” Miranda said excitedly, ignoring Lauren’s question. “He actually called me today.” I liked the story, it kept my interest. I am fond of ghost stories that aren't completely out there with Hollywood style special effects descriptions. While it is not as good as Anne Rice's Witching Hour, it kind of put me in mind of that book (one of my favorites.) I also love the time slip quality. It is one of my favorite devices. She wore a white sleeveless shirt that buttoned down the front, and Lauren could see her training bra through it. Lauren had started wearing a training bra too even though she really didn’t need it yet. By the time she actually needed the trainer Miranda would be wearing women’s bras, probably. I really enjoyed The Ghost Tree and wholeheartedly recommend it as a good read. I love the descriptions of people and events. There is a great feeling of place and time, so much so that it works as historical fiction as well as a crime/mystery story. The characters are all developing nicely over the series – I have to admit that I am glad the twins have moved on. Dodo is most interesting after the talking to she got at the end of the previous book – very clever. The other police are all nicely distinctive and feel real because they are not stereotypes or completely predictable. Even the weird parents are more likeable the more we come across them. A gentle romance is well handled. A maroon station wagon was coming down Main Street and Lauren pretended to be absorbed in Miranda’s face as it went by. The one person Lauren never had any trouble pretending not to see was her mother. In the meantime I’ve got a novella collection, a novel and a short story coming out this year, so there’s plenty to keep you busy until NEAR THE BONE and HORSEMAN are released. BSBI List 2007 (xls). Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland. Archived from the original (xls) on 26 June 2015 . Retrieved 17 October 2014. Smiths Hollow is full of dark secrets, long buried and hidden away. It isn’t long before those secrets are discovered and monsters are unleashed, both human and not. Lauren is also dealing with her father’s death during the previous year, and her ongoing battles with her critical mother. Fortunately, her 4-year-old brother David is the bright spot in her life.

THE GHOST TREE WILL AN ANCIENT LEGEND WEAVE A YOUNG GIRL’S DESTINY? In a remote mountain village lives Grandmother Atl, a very talented weaver, and her granddaughter, Nemimati. Nemimati wants nothing more than to help her grandmother live a better life, so she convinces her to enter a contest where the winner will receive the title of royal weaver—and get to live in the comfort of the royal palace. Grandmother Atl sends Nemimati and her young friend, Mishtla, to gather the scarce magical beans from which a luminous golden dye can be made. Eventually, the children stop to rest near the ruins of the mysterious palace garden where Goddess Tonantzin’s Ghost Tree of legend fortuitously appears and graciously fills their baskets. However, not until the day of the long awaited contest does Nemimati hear the miraculous tree’s appearance explained. This mythic tale is set in the pre-Columbian era of legendary Toltec emperor Quetzalcoatl. His legend proclaims him a beneficent sovereign who promoted heartfelt personal sacrifice for one another rather than the religious rite of sacrificed hearts practiced by other rulers. It is also stated that he presented his subjects with wealth and all knowledge.Though this is told through many different eyes, Lauren is the main focus and who we find to be the most reliable narrator. Though only fourteen, she is a fairly mature and levelheaded young girl who seems to really know who she is (I give credit to the era she grows up in). Our story starts with Lauren meeting her best friend Miranda by the Ghost Tree in the woods, a place that scares most residents of Smiths Hollow, but also a place the girls have gone to since they were small. Lauren feels comfort and peace when she is in the woods, which is surprising given all that’s…happened…

If you chose to save the spirit, some of the children can be found later at the school in Novigrad. The Ghost Tree is so creepy and SO GOOD. The author does such a great job of letting us into Lauren’s mind, showing the uncertainties that a girl her age feels about all the changes in her life, but also showing her taking a stand and starting to own her opinions and take a stand.

Success!

This isn't really a retelling but it almost feels like it could be...there's even a princess...but you know, she dies (not really a spoiler)...that's pretty much what this author does turns the fairytales on their ass, so to speak. If you've read and liked any of Christina Henry's other books...then you probably will like this one. I haven't found a book by her that I didn't at least like. She tells the story without any extra BS thrown in...which I'm a fan of...although this one had some mother/teen daughter drama in it...but it did have a reason for being there. In the meantime Lauren, 15 years old, recently lost her father who was brutally killed in the woods just like two girls feels a painful headache and sees visions about how the girls get killed. And she realizes there is something supernatural about the killings of those girls. And I was so delighted at the cameo appearance of March Middleton and … I really should have seen it coming and I didn’t!
