Lin's restrained pace and tone bring out the author's simple yet powerful descriptions of the flavorful melting pot of Singaporean culture, with its excesses of wealth and exploitation of the maid trade. For instance, the maids discover a Facebook group where many of Singapore's elite with workers in their homes tell story after story about how they are convinced their maid was stealing, cheating with the husband of the house, etc. This is a very good thread to the story and the situation set up according to the author, was inspired by a real case which culminated in the execution of the accused and convicted domestic.

The final two pages brought me to near tears in relation to one of the protagonist’s journey with her grief. On March 1, 2019, DuVernay announced the series had been retitled When They See Us and would be released on May 31, 2019.

Donita bristles at the abusive control exerted by her church leader, especially when it interferes with the relationship she pursues on her days off. It reflects the uneasy dynamic that exists in many Singapore households, where you share a living space with someone who you might say is part of the family, but who, at the end of the day, is a paid employee. The bottom line is that if you turn off you brain and enjoy it on a very superficial level, you'll enjoy it.Jaswal’s well-crafted novel blends mystery, social commentary, and human drama into a fascinating amalgam that highlights the plight of decidedly unseen women undertaking cheap labor that exposes them to all sorts of abuse.
