About this deal

However I just found out that one of the game rules is that there's no communication between the two players.

It has this strange yet interesting familiarity curve where the table will try to get their bearings, slow playing it as they peruse their action options. Doing so allows you to mark a new number on that horse’s card, meaning even more of the pack moves when it does. If you’re going to place a bet on number seven, lovingly dubbed Better Safe Than Sorry, you want to wait until each player before you have taken their turn. It puts a degree of control back into the hands of the bettors, offering a psychological out from the perceived oppression of randomness. The higher numbered horses start out with more of their boxes on other cards marked, meaning they’re more likely to move and hence more likely to place well.

At the beginning of the game, each player gets a betting card to mark off and eight horses are lined up at the start line of the track, ready to go. In Long Shot the Dice Game, players are bidding on horses controlled by two dice that are passed around the table. That makes it a bit more strategic, although perhaps a bit less exciting and it takes longer to learn and play. The wooden horse markers are really chunky and satisfying, and so much less creepy than the plastic ones from the original game.

By placing bets in the back half of the lap, you can strap your bags of cash onto horses in the lead, or perhaps horses other players are influencing.Other options include moving horses of your choice on the track backwards or forward, influencing their chances.

It’s fairly easy to learn, fast to play, plays well from one to eight players, and has a satisfying mix of both strategy and randomness. Those mini dopamine hits from comboing things together isn’t as prevalent as in something like Hadrian’s Wall, but it’s still very satisfying. And, in truth, it is a legitimate argument that if, you actually do end up really enjoying a multiplayer solitaire game then what does it really matter that the game had low/no interaction? In the six player game, four of us had played before and most people knew what they were doing before it came to their turn. Once players understand what options are available, it’s all about making the best decisions and using bonuses wisely.
