About this deal

Buildable art piece to display in your home – This working model of a lighthouse measures over 54 cm (21.5 in.) high, 25 cm (10 in.) wide and 25 cm (10 in.) deep Fair enough – except for the difficult economic climate we find ourselves in during 2022, and the sheer number of other equally-as-expensive LEGO sets competing for our investment. On the one hand, I very much agree. Rechargeable batteries would be so much more efficient and convenient. I got my nephews some Light Stax a few years ago, while not perfect that works so well. In the Lighthouse tower is this portrait of Augustin-Jean Fresnel, inventor of the Fresnel Lens, which is a lovely homage to the historical figure.

Hanging on the walls is this lovely family photo of the Quattrinis – what an honour to be turned into minifigures on a sepia poster! Now, I know the Chinese Lantern Festival is able to connect to the Modular sets. What I don’t know about is the Marvel buildings (specifically the Daily Bugle or Sanctum Santorum) or Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley. As you can see from the photos provided, the illumination of the Lantern Room seems quite intense, not something that’s easily achievable with the existing LEGO LED Light. Despite the Powered Up elements and wires used, they were integrated (and hidden) very well in the set, so much so that you can’t tell that it’s Motorised just by looking at the model from the outside.

Our difference

The preface provides information about lighthouses, Fresnel lenses, and the fan and LEGO designers (Luka Kapeter, Claus Madsen (graphics), Peter Licht (elements)) involved in the set. I think we all understand WHY they do it, but that still doesn't mean we have to like it. I prefer not to have too many weird colors, not at invisible places, and certainly not at spots that do remain somewhat visible. I mean, yesterday I watched Jang's review of the Camaro, can anyone explain why we all should consider it a good thing you can see several tones of blue and red around the wheels? Because I bet we'll gonna have the exact same discussion when that review comes out here. The tower is a relatively straightforward build: a square internal structure is clad with panels formed primarily of 2x3 slopes to form the circular exterior. The cable and axle are neatly concealed in the walls. You didn't understand the mission statement. It's not about developing better building skills with Lego.

Overall this is a great set but people will be put off by the high cost of the set. If you look at the other ideas sets on the market for the same price you can get the Home Alone house and nearly double the number of pieces. Underneath it is a small cave, with a jewel-laden treasure chest inside. The switch to turn on the battery box can be operated from inside it, too. Now this might be less of an issue with Control+ hub, as that is very much a throwaway system that becomes obsolete once app support stops (or your last compatible device dies....probably because of its battery!), but that's no problem with the "dumb" battery box.The LEGO Ideas Motorized Lighthouse is based on an idea shared by 20-year old, Canadian LEGO fan, Sandro Quattrini. LEGO Designers: Luka Kapeter, (Senior Model Designer), Claus Tannebæk Madsen (Senior Graphic Designer), Peter de Fine Licht (Senior Play Designer, Elements) The fact it's also functional is the icing on the cake. However, as I said above, it's not as impressive as it could be because the LED is too weak to cast much light around the room. If there's ever a set that would benefit from a 3rd party lighting kit to provide something with a bit more oomph, this is it. However, there is a downside to that: batteries don't last forever. And even if you could replace them, will the same type still be available? Normal batteries: very much yes, those have hardly changed in the last half a century (at least not form factor). But anything slightly special.....that's a different story.

Real Value [2]– The total sum of the parts do not really meet the asking price, especially in this post-price rise LEGO world Watch the tower's functional light rotate round and round! Or, if you prefer to power the lights independently you can do so simply with the provided USB Power Cable. Of course. Lego designers are taught (from what I read) to keep it around that range for new 12 year old builders (with some help from mom or dad) or an experienced 12 year old builder no problem." Some people are confused by or complain about multi-colored assemblies in the belly of builds. Why are they done that way? Well, apart from the aforementioned nod, it’s my understanding that there are a small handful of reasons for this. First, bright and diverse colors make it easier to follow the instructions and see what you’re doing with a model. It’s also fun, and otherwise breaks up a build with primarily neutral colors. Other things you might not have thought of include part availability and cost of production. (i.e. Why do a whole run of a new part color when it’s just going to get covered up and you have others on hand?)And while to some extent I can understand why they do it as long as it stays invisible, but too often they overdo it. With 21317 probably the worst offender ever. Could anyone keep a straight face when opening that box?
