Some of us are more organised than others, some less so, but that’s the crux of the job description. Elmore Leonard wrote the book based on his experiences with Hollywood, and there are some good jokes made about actors and producers. The book follows Chili Palmer, a Miami loan shark with a talent for making a slow pay come across by saying just three words.

I was intrigued that Chili was able to talk to an A-list movie star when others couldn’t get to him. The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo.

The movie is not only a stellar entertainment, but ended a forty-odd year dry spell in which Hollywood seemed unable or unwilling to balance the explosiveness of Leonard's violence with the sweetness of his characters and their casual, often hilarious, dialogue.Ray Barboni, after learning about Leo's money from his wife, comes to Los Angeles looking for the money Chili collected from Leo, only to find the key to the locker from the failed drug deal in one of Chili's pockets. Chili Palmer is a terrific character and would love to see him show up in other stories, though Elmore did bring him back in Be Cool. Featuring extraordinary illustrations by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and an exclusive introduction by Janina Ramirez, each of the 750 numbered copies has been signed by both contributors.
