The DK Eyewitness series has been my travel guidebook go-to for nearly two decades, so I was excited to learn about this new title. So whilst some of the alternatives may be in the same country and reasonably close to each other, such as Avebury and Stonehenge (approximately 25 miles), others will be in different countries, such as Les Arenes de Nimes in France as an alternative to the Colosseum in Italy.

As a consummate traveler (100 countries and counting), I was delighted with this beautifully illustrated book of travel alternatives. Another nice touch is that there is a little section for each location that tells you the best time of year to go to the over-visited locations if none of the alternatives fit your fancy.
