About this deal

Meanwhile, Hetty struggles to understand her feelings for Bertie – and for Jem, whom she has never forgotten. She snuck into the boy's wing by stealing some boy's uniform to check on Gideon, and ran into Saul while doing so.

Yes, Gid, smash those pointless gender roles and stick to your quilting and gardening and whatever brings joy to that poor shellshocked heart of yours. For example, she doesn’t get all the suggestive jokes she hears performed on stage (they are not shared with the reader), but she’s wise enough to try to avoid a man, Samson, whose interest in her is clearly inappropriate and would definitely damage her reputation. Also, I know this is already 5 books long but we neeeeedddd another book as we need to know what happens - ahh I can't say anything because I might spoil it but I know there is potential for another book.

Indeed, it sort of feels as if years have passed since the beginning of this book, and even more so since the beginning of the series (which is actually absolutely true in-universe), and while I'm still my old self, it's almost as if I've changed along with Hetty and her rich gallery of friends and found family. His lurking presence is a good lesson, I think, especially for the older readers who are probably reading this independently. Getting back to the story, it was really strong, the charcters were very intresting and once again it delt with some dark area's like that older guy Simon lurking around, teaching really a moral not to go near guys that creep you out! I've got to say, when it comes to subverting societal expectations, Gid really is like a true twin of Hetty's, going once more to prove that found family trumps all.Hetty takes Diamond to visit Bignor and Flora, who's got a new friend in the show, Lucy Locket, the littlest woman in the world. Before wrapping this (entirely too lengthy) review, I need to spare a word or two for the littlest Little Star, sweet tiny Diamond who seems to steal every heart (of anyone with a heart, that is) wherever she goes. certain persons we'll discuss in a sec; they're rather good parallels of each other, both institution-raised children, both servants fresh out of their respective institutions, both free spirits refusing to bow down to the society that would have them trampled underfoot if they'd let it; both harbouring a dream of performing on stage and making it true separately yet together, in a way. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather.

The people the girls meet, the friends they make, the dangers they encounter, and the glamorous music hall entertainers they accompany, all make fascinating reading. She befriended Ida, the kitchen maid, who slipped her extra treats during mealtimes, and was good at receiving sweets on Sundays, although they were frequently stolen from her by bigger girls. The Victorian era is also fleshed out throughout, and Jacqueline gives you multiple glimpses in varying locations.

I don't know, but it rubbed me the wrong way in book 3, and it did that much more so here, resulting in the 'sainted' Jem becoming a fallen angel in my books, a shattered ideal, much like he was to Hetty. I just love this entire series, I've read plenty of books, but this is by far one of my favourite series. MY only problem, is that how Bertie is selfless and willing to give up everything he has for Hetty, Hetty isn't willing to give him the same sentiment. This book had the usual adventure with twists and turns for a Hetty Feather book, as well as included more romance!

Some good points is that the story overall was great, Hetty going and performing at a musical hall was not what I expected, especially with poor Diamond but that is what Jacqueline Wilson gave us and I am not disappointed, it even gave Hetty and Bertie time to catch up again and see their relationship bloom again like it did in the second book, I liked the idea of Hetty and Bertie in the end getting together and while the ending of little star's seem to hint that they do I would still love to see more of it.
