Lastly, there is a number printed below the bubbles, representing the sum that the Ally cards have to at least add up to when recruiting the Lord. These are worth negative points and can be spent as regular pearls but only if you have no “normal” pearls available to spend. In my opinion, the rulebook would have been stronger if the “clarifying” section hit on each Lord and Location instead of just a handful. Request support from the council: Choose any of the 5 council decks and take all the cards into your hand.While they can bounce around the room if misplaced, I enjoyed using them as the game currency and felt it was a nice thematic touch. The first player will always have to start by “exploring the deep”, which is the only way to get ally factions into your hand at the start of the game. Is this game of undersea strategy just a pretty face or does it have what it takes to earn a spot on your gaming shelf? When you request support from the Council, take all of the cards from one stack in the Council-without looking at them beforehand!

Request support from the council – As ally cards build up in the council, it can be an attractive option to take a pile to boost your hand of allies. Even my wife, who was also very skeptical of it based on the cover art, has become a huge fan even after playing only a handful of times. In terms of gameplay, on your turn there is only three things you can do, so it’s fairly easy to teach and learn. The game board depicts the council itself, in stunning detail, and has space for cards from the main three elements of the game – the depths, the council, and the court. Unfortunately, I am going to start the review off with a slight negative and that negative happens to be the rulebook.To recruit a Lord, you must play enough Allies from your hand to pay the costs shown on that Lord card (see inset). The small ally cards are pretty simple, coming in different values within each race, from one to five. The deck contains five factions in five colours; squid, crabs, seahorses, jellyfish (jellies), and shellies (not the real term but I like this better). One of the great things I like about Abyss is the interesting dynamic between the interactions of all the components.

Once a player has recruited seven lords the game ends, scores are totalled, and the new ruler of the Abyss is declared! Considering the theme is evil corrupt lords that you bribe into doing your bidding, and the vast majority of the lords are really quite ugly looking, I just love the art and think the whole thing is a feast for the eyes. The Five Allied Races: Squids in blue, Shellfish in green, Crabs in red, Seahorses in yellow, and Jellyfish in purple. ou may perform this action as many times as you want (as long as you can pay and there are empty spaces).

From the second you open up the box (which comes in 5 different covers), you are greeted with a variety of highly thematic visuals. I think theme wise that you pay these jellyfish and seahorses for the lords to eat, which is kind of rough, but the lords do look like they would eat them. It ended up being a really clever card game with a good mix of interaction between players and mechanics. The remaining cards are placed in the respective discard pile for each particular coloured Lord (Blue Lords in the blue discard pile etc).
