About this deal

Magical thinking can be a healthy coping tool to provide comfort, optimism, and a sense of control in an unpredictable world. But relying too heavily on magical thinking can cause emotional distress and constrain your relationships and activities. This thinking pattern can become too rigid and extreme, leading to a feeling that arbitrary and illogical rules are taking over your life. Gradually, as you overcome each compulsion, you can start to move up the hierarchy, moving onto a more difficult/distressing item each time until you have overcome the most distressing one. In some mental health conditions, such as OCD, magical thinking leads to the performance of certain rituals. When you’re prone to anxiety and magical thinking, optimism can be an act of bravery. It can be scary to imagine the possibility of good things happening in the year ahead, especially after enduring many difficult years in succession. Obsessions are often at the root of the OCD experience. An obsession is an intrusive and unwanted thoughtor urge that causes anxiety or distress for the person experiencing it.

Then start with the situation or compulsion that is the LEAST distressing. You will need to decide what is achievable for the first week - to stop doing it altogether, to restrict how many times or for how long you do it, or to delay doing it for a certain period of time. If you decide to delay, then you can use this sheet: Delay, Distract, Decide or Distract Your attention. The treatment of magical thinking OCD aims to help the patients to gain control over their intrusive thoughts. The sufferer needs to beware of and identify the looping thoughts. People, who can actively stop those thoughts, develop more control over them. 4. Distraction therapy People suffering from Magical Thinking OCD are encouraged to seek treatment from a mental health treatment provider that specializes in the treatment of OCD. OCD specialists are equipped and prepared to treat a wide array of OCD subtypes, including Magical Thinking. Like all types of OCD, Magical Thinking can be treated with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), specifically with treatment approaches called Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. It is true that focusing your attention on positive vs negative things can shift your frame of mind and learning to be compassionate with yourself can benefit your mental health. However, the presence of negative thoughts themselves cannot directly influence the physical world. We can’t just think things into being. If that were true, horrible things like homelessness, cancer, and natural disasters would not exist. Engaging in behaviors around “good” numbers, colors, words, or dates, such as crossing a doorway a certain number of times For many people—even mental health professionals—identifying these symptoms, assessing their impact on your life, and making an accurate diagnosis of OCD can be difficult. But an experienced therapist with specialized training in OCD and ERP, like myself and my colleagues here at NOCD, can help you understand how your symptoms work, learn the ways they impact your life, and work with you to create a personalized treatment plan and manage your symptoms in the long term.

A lot of people with OCD feel very responsible for preventing a terrible thing from happening (e.g. "I must keep bacteria away from my family otherwise they might become ill or die and it will be my fault"). She writes with an honesty that is not ashamed of how her brain works; she doesn't demonize every aspect of her conditions, nor does she try to be pointlessly uplifting with what she goes through. There was a humor and frankness in her writing that made me feel seen and understood. I was deeply affected by her stories in a way that will help me be more gracious to myself. She also gave me a bunch of new fun facts about Walt Disney to pull out at get-togethers to either entertain or confuse everyone else, much to my delight. If I do not hold my breath when I pass this graveyard, I will place a curse on myself and everyone around me.” Here’s a common form of magical thinking that many people with OCD engage in: The idea that we could have “already” ruined the year ahead.

A high self-serving bias, which is common in conditions such as schizophrenia, may reinforce magical thinking. Use the Vicious Cycle & Alternatives (PDF) to map out your own thoughts, feeling and behaviours, and generate some healthier alternative thoughts and behaviours. Some people can become so obsessed with their superstitions that it becomes all-consuming, and they can’t focus on anything else. Is Magical Thinking OCD Treatable?Compulsions are oftentimes the reaction to said obsessions, carried out in an effort to calm them down. OCD-related compulsion types are numerous and include repeatedly turning the light switch on and off, washing one’s hands, silently repeating a particular sentence, and more. Obsession: A person has an intrusive thought that they believe their loved ones will be in an accident if they don’t touch every doorknob in their house three times before leaving. Once you choose a plan, you’ll work with your therapist on the emotions that come up during the exposures. It will be scary at first. It may bring up many of the fears you’ve been trying to alleviate with your compulsions (e.g., what if something bad happens to the person I texted and it really is my fault?). But with practice, you’ll find the intense need to engage in your compulsion will wane. You will get to a point where your anxiety around texting subsides, and you are able to send a text message any time you like. How to get help Studies 20 Sharma, A., Madaan, V., & Petty, F. D. Identify the looping thoughts Magical thinking OCD can work similarly in adulthood. A grown woman who noticed that her OCD-related anxiety lessened, and her obsessions went away when she tapped the light switch with her index finger, could develop magical thinking OCD as a result. Depending on her level of insight, she may feel there is no harm in continuing this ritual, find it to likely help her ward off her OCD, or emphatically believe it has the power to cure her condition.
