About this deal

The murderer will then point to one means of murder card in front of them and one evidence card, they’ll then close their eyes. While it comes from (One Night) Ultimate Werewolf designer Ted Alspach, the theme here is a little incongruous: there’s really nothing that were-y or wolf-y going on. After this lightning-fast setup you’re off the to the races, if one of the racehorses knew how to win the race but couldn’t speak and another racehorse was a massive liar. I suppose there could be some information gained by the veracity with which they argue against their cards, but there’s not really any other opportunities to gain information about who the traitor is.

If there are a lot of office equipment cards spread around they’ll want their clue to be a photocopier as opposed to ‘a menu from a fancy restaurant’.

The box says the game plays up to 12 people, and if that’s the case you’re looking at nearly 100 tiny cards with frustratingly small text. That means if you send the table down a dead-end all you can do is put your head in your hands and hope that somehow the murderer is so strident in their allegations that they draw suspicious as a mere consequence of their advocacy.

Each player is given the world’s tiniest police badge, and when you want to try and solve the case you must declare “Let me solve the crime! In Dixit and Mysterium people can undertake whatever flights of association and interpretation they like and that’s tremendously freeing. The games don’t get richer with repeated plays – they become frayed at the seams and increasingly threadbare. Adding to the mayhem are powerful abilities unlocked by passing fascist policies that can lead even a liberal president down a dark path “for the greater good”. The accomplice provides some much needed back up especially with bigger numbers and with a group which are leaning heavily to one player, It may be some much needed relief. After this, there is another round of presentations but be warned: the game ends immediately after the final round of presentations. I understand why you would want a time limit, because discussion can go on forever analyzing different possibilities from the vague clues. At the start of the game, each player is assigned several Cluedo-like means-of-murder cards and clue cards, before the secretly-selected murderer picks one of each to be the ‘true answer’. This last rule is what gives Deception a sort of low-voltage electric current that runs through negotiations.

The key that locks everything into place is the fact that the murderer player gets to choose which combination of weapon and clue the investigators have to guess.I suppose it forces people to contribute, which might help bring shy players more into the game, but it seems rather arbitrary and ends up creating more awkwardness rather than less. I’ve only played with bigger groups so we always use the Accomplice and Witness rules which also helps make things more exciting!
