Again, as I continued listening to the book I realized how this was (to my understanding) all part of the idea of the story and the growth and maturing we see the female character go through. In the book, the shark devours the Hooper character, presumably chomps Quint as well (on the page, the shark hunter’s death mirrors Ahab’s sealogged fate), and then simply dies from the wounds Quint inflicted on the fish when it’s supposed to be Brody’s turn. Meanwhile, Joss didn’t understand why I didn’t want to make a big deal out of every single senior milestone like she did. A keg party takes place where some characters drink but aren't drunk; the major characters drink very little or nothing (one takes a sip of beer, the other doesn't drink at all). But as Liz and Wes scheme to get Liz noticed by Michael so she can have her magical prom moment, she's shocked to discover that she likes being around Wes.

He teeters between abject disgust for his human prey, desperation, madness, and a terrifying blankness behind his eyes. These rocky, awkward moments just made Liz come across as all the more real and, for me, made her that much more likable and relatable. Ellis’ satire is all sharp edges, but Mary Harron‘s sharp directorial eye captures the black humor at the bloody heart of the story while ditching some of the book’s extreme misogyny.I think I was a bit hesitant going into this one because recently there weren’t many YA books that blew my mind, and I thought I outgrew them, but in here there was some kind of magic, and I think it’s due to the fact that this book, at least in my opinion, reads more as a romance book than a contemporary YA one.

Jocelyn, who I might have forgotten existed in the presence of such lovely Michaelhood, nudged me with her elbow and whispered, “Settle down.I really like books where it’s so obvious the guy has feelings/a crush and the female character just literally cannot see it, no matter what he does. We’d grown up on the same street but hadn’t become actual good friends until sophomore year, so even though she knew my mom had died when I was in fifth grade, we’d never really talked about it. I have been steadily working my way through Lynn Painter’s backlist and now after this one I think I only have one more book to read before I have to join the queue of people who are awaiting each new publication. That was until Lynn, the author, swooped in like a hero and granted my birthday wish—and as soon as my most anticipated book (of, like, seven months! But as Liz and Wes scheme to get Liz her magical prom moment, she's shocked to discover that she actually likes being around Wes.

Her extensive knowledge and love of romantic comedies was so endearing, as was her slightly misguided attempt to secure her own happy ending by fake dating her neighbor in an effort to get Michael’s attention. We turned down the west wing, and before I had a chance to even look at her, I saw him walking toward me. This little indie starred a host of early 2000s-era young talent who were often in the tabloids themselves, including Wilmer Valderrama, Macaulay Culkin, and Mia Kirshner. Wrong Number, The Do-Over, Betting on You, and Nothing Like the Movies, as well as being a regular contributor to the Omaha World-Herald. Obviously, Young Adult books are THE best, but I do have a soft spot for poetry and adult books also.While American Psycho excised the novel’s most distressing moments, Darren Aronovsky’s adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr. Great debut novel with some very original elements that are unique from other YA novels of the same trope.
