About this deal

Again, we don't want to give too much away for any of the horror mazes for those heading to the event later this week. However they said The Crest was captivating and left you guessing at every turn. Currently, it remains in the hands of Coventry City Council where it is classed as a Grade 1 history building. This abode contains several spirits, the most active of which is Abbot Geoffrey who was brutally slashed and slaughtered by an unknown assailant in the 12th century. Bear in mind these occurrences are not a few ghostly apparitions and screams, they are full fledged spectral battles that flare up the sky. After the battle these incidents were occuring near daily, with such horror that the occurrences made their way to King Charles who sent a troop of soldiers to verify these claims.

There have also been numerous reports of a pair of ghostly monks who have been seen walking throughout the hotel. There have also been incidents where two phantom priests were seen in the hotel’s courtyard. The reception area is said to be haunted by a group of small girls who are often heard giggling or laughing despite the fact that there is nobody there. Finally, there is also the apparition of a young stable boy who is usually accompanied by an absolutely foul stench. Neville was later killed in the Battle of Barnet in 1471, while fighting King Edward IV during the War of the Roses (1455 – 1487). The castle then passed to Neville’s son-in-law, George Plantagenet: 1st Duke of Clarence. This was a branch of the English monarchy (1154 – 1485). But, he was executed in 1478 and the castle and its lands passed on to Edward Plantagenet. He was only two years old. photocluster via Getty Images Poor Edward Plantagenet

And these ghosts that are believed to haunt this castle are just as bizarre and malicious as you might expect. Sir Fulke Greville

Modern reports of the castle’s ghosts still include the sound of phantom footsteps, however they are no longer attributed to Guy but soldiers of the past. Many books also claim Mr Marsh himself experienced the phantom footsteps and not the former bailiff – which is untrue. The paranormal activity at Salford Hall Hotel is rife throughout the property. The majority of the ghosts that haunt here all seem to have some connection to a religious theme. One of the most common spectres to be seen at Salford Hall Hotel is probably the ghostly nun. She is usually seen on the lower floor of the hotel and has been reported by both staff members and guests alike! She is thought to be the restless soul of a nun who was brutally murdered here sometime in the 17 th century. The Haunted Castle is available to explore every day, 10am to 5pm, and guests can attend haunted shows, visit the haunted hollows, witch's tower or find their way through the Horrible Histories maze. Moll Bloxham is the biggest issue I have with the castle’s hauntings. Not only is her story implausible, but the fact she was tried in the “1700s” would mean there should be a reference to her alleged trial – yet there is none. If Moll is this terrifying spectre wreaking revenge for her death, why are there no reports of her ghost pre-1960s? (Update 22nd July 2013)

What you need to know

Ralph Haywood, confronted Greville over his belief that his employer was attempting to cheat him in his will. When it comes to Halloween and preparing to be spooked. There's nothing more creepy than a medieval castle. My favourite part of all, however, was one of the many tours of the castle by historian Andrew, who really knew how to hold an audience. He was funny and informative – everything a tour guide should be. There was also a more grisly tour, which takes visitors through the main rooms of the castle and tells tales of murders at the grounds many years ago. In 1885, the Earl had grown annoyed by all the people coming and going through the home he closed the castle’s doors to tourists. For two weeks, visitors are entertained by a variety of spooky shows, creepy games and spine tingling ghost stories.
