About this deal

The first portable folding stool is believed to have been made over 4,500 years ago in Mesopotamia, but JB Fenby’s 1881 folding chair in wood and canvas set the standard and still inspires many of the camping chairs made today, including the Snow Peak bamboo chair below. The arrival of lightweight aluminium post-WW2 expanded the possibilities and nowadays there’s a huge range of specially-designed outdoor seats to choose from, usually made from weatherproof synthetic fabrics and meshes. The Alpha Camp chair folds down into a 137cm long bag (53.9 inches) and weighs about 6kg (1 stone) – this isn’t the lightest, but the weight gives a feeling of solidity and reliability. It will fit easily into a car boot or campervan/caravan, but you would not want to be carrying it a long distance.

One of our new faves is the Vango Thor folding chair – a great chair from a great company who stand by their warranties and have been around for what seems like Thorever! I’ll get my coat… The drinks holder in the left arm is of great quality, and there is even a cooler box section in the right arm – perfect to keep a couple of tinnies cool on a hot day! Easy to clean: The chair is made from easy-to-clean materials, making it simple to keep it looking great even after extended use. You promised me the Moon and all I ended up with was this chair – well to be honest it was a great deal! Weight capacity: The chair has a weight capacity of up to 120 kg, making it suitable for most people.Made of high quality materials, the Alpha Camp has a well-designed steel leg lattice to provide 160 kg of weight tolerance and a comfortable seat with no awkward crossbars under your bum. The chair uses a reinforced breathable Oxford mesh which contours your body nicely and it’s too sweaty. Aimed at the younger market (although certainly not restricted to them) with a bunch of loud colours in the lineup, the Orson is essentially a large bag which can be waved around your head to fill up with air and then sealed via a velcro strip. In terms of extras the KingCamp excels. There are two storage aids – a decent side cup bag which could be used to hold a flask or your mobile phone for example. There is also a cooler bag included which can store two or three cans and keep them cool if you’ve taken them out of the fridge. A really neat touch.

Is the Kingcamp worth the price tag? Well to our minds yes it is. If camping is a way of life for you, where you might spend many hours per year appreciating the countryside views, then having a decent chair is worth a modest outlay. The Marko chair uses a tried and trusted folding collapsible leg system, seen on countless other competitors. In this case there are three poles emanating from the rear two feet rather than the usual two – this provides greater stability than usual. Although we haven’t tested it in the rain, it could probably provide some protection if it’s a light rain shower. The Hi-Gear Mantua Deluxe Moon Chair is a high-quality and comfortable camping chair that provides a unique and relaxing seating experience. It is perfect for camping trips, festivals, and other outdoor adventures where comfort and style are important. Then the clever bit – the velcro part is rolled over itself a few times to slightly reduce the volume of the enclosed space. This increases the air pressure inside and gives the bag a decent amount of support. And boy is this lounger comfortable! In use, we found it comfortable and rugged – there doesn’t seem much chance of legs breaking or material wearing away. There’s also a drinks holder fitted to the right hand arm rest – just where most of us need it! The KingCamp chair uses a tried and trusted folding collapsible leg system, seen on countless other competitors. However, in this case there are three poles emanating from the feet rather than the usual two – this provides greater stability than cheaper alternative. It’s the age-old compromise – cost vs quality. Where does a great price start eating into the enjoyment of your item to the point where you wish you’d not bought it. This Marko camping chair is right on that price point – while it is by far the cheapest chair we’ve reviewed, it is certainly not terrible and we recommend it for those on a budget. It’s worth noting that the Orson is not the cheapest of the pumpless inflatable loungers – there are lower priced rival inflatable products such as the Siphly chair.

King by name, King by nature. We were hooked on this chair from the moment we removed it from its drawstrung bag and unfolded the legs – you literally sink into it and never want to get up again! We were hooked on this chair from the moment we removed it from its drawstrung bag and unfolded the legs – you literally sink into it and never want to get up again. The Homecall Directors chair continues that tradition and offers some nice little extras which raise it on to the winner’s podium of folding camping chairs. I thought I’d miss having armrests to relax my arms, but I barely noticed they weren’t there and it made the chair lighter. The one downside is that the drinks holder has to be strapped onto the bottom, as you can see in the photo. It holds a water bottle, but up-ends any glass with a stem, predictably. The Coleman is light but strong and doesn’t take up much space at all when folded. The dimensions are only 78 x 55 x 13 cm and the weight just under 3.5kg – pretty good specs.

There is a standard drinks holder in the right armrest which can hold a 500ml bottle of ale, and an awesome cooler box section in the left – perfect to keep a couple of tinnies cool on a hot day! We really appreciated this feature dueing the recent UK heatwave (sadly now gone!). Kingcamp are a fairly new camping equipment company, but we have found that they consistently offer decent value with sturdy and comfortable gear. The chair legs are strong and sturdy – this is clearly a quality item and is capable of supporting people up to 120kg in weight. The seat can be adjusted from upright to near lie flat – with 7 options available – meaning you can completely chill, without actually getting chilled. The fabric is robust and durable, yet comfy to touch, and is padded and designed to radiate heat, meaning once the pad warms up (which literally takes seconds), you feel the benefit almost immediately. The KingCamp chair uses a tried and trusted folding collapsible leg system, seen on countless other competitors. In this case there are three poles emanating from the rear feet rather than the usual two – this provides greater stability than cheaper alternatives.
