They also went the extra mile by installing a metallic cover at the bottom of the balustrade to cover a gap that our cat would be able to sneak through - effectively making the screens useless. Good quality glass fibre fly screen mesh has a lifespan of up to 15 years. A lower quality mesh may be impacted by being exposed to UV rays which could reduce that life span significantly. Life span is also impacted by wear and tear and also damage. Obviously puncturing the mesh of a fly screen, will reduce it’s effectiveness. Hence the type of fly screen that the mesh is incorporated into also has an impact on life span. A framed fly screen is more prone to damage than a roller fly screen for example. The mesh on roller fly screens only needs to be deployed when the windows or door is open, meaning the mesh is hidden away in the cassette, for a greater proportion of the time, protecting it from damage. We find that roller fly screen have the longest life span compared to other types of fly screens.
