About this deal

There was quite a large, diverse cast of characters and each of them played a role in Red’s quest for answers. I loved that I never quite knew who to trust. There are clues, red herrings and mis-directions thrown at the reader as the mystery unfolds. I’d think I had it all figured out and then realise I was completely wrong. The final twist took me by complete surprise. This is such a glorious adventure, full of scheming and betrayal, with a delicious whiff of magic at its heart. Our hero holds only a few cards, and she must play them exactly right if she wants to survive William Shaw, author of the DS Alexandra Cupidi series Shepherd- Robinson presents perennial themes of truth and lies, love and loyalty, and chance and fate . . . This is a captivatingly complex tale of intrigue set in a world hesitantly blundering its way to being post-Newtonian. Publisher’s Weekly I was enthusiastic about it until I started reading it and I just knew we weren't going to get along. I love that it is set in Bath, as that place is one of my favourite cities to spend time in, and obviously one of those reasons is because of the closeness with Jane Austen. This will sound terrible, but I couldn't picture Laura Shepherd-Robinson's characters swanning about in Bath. I'm a way, the story didn't belong there. Many thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley for the digital review copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

It’s hard to talk about The Square of Sevens without spoilers, because it has layers upon layers of intrigue, secrets and emotions. All building on each other, and when you’d think you know where things are heading, then something comes along to challenge your views. It doesn’t happen too often th There was quite a large, diverse cast of characters and each of them played a role in Red's quest for answers. I loved that I never quite knew who to trust. Fortune telling has always captured my imagination so the detailed reading of fortunes in this book were very compelling! The chapter titles are very clever as they depict the Square of Sevens but that was not enough to fully win me over. I did enjoy the twists and turns that came along the way. Red experiences a lot in this book. Red is an interesting character. She was raised in a time where she had little choices and opportunity yet found her way and made opportunities for herself. She was strong, inquisitive, and intent on finding the truth no matter what. This book has a lot going on and I usually enjoy Gothic tales, but this is one that never fully won me over. My thanks to Pan Macmillan Mantle for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Square of Sevens’ by Laura Shepherd-Robinson.Wow. This is the second of Laura’s three books I’ve read, and the first standalone. I don’t typically read much in this time period (or much about fortune telling), but I was so impressed by the other LS-R book I’d read, I gave it a go. And it didn’t disappoint. Red is a young girl who travels with her father, a fortune teller named John Jory Jago. They make their living predicting fortunes using the ancient Cornish method the Square of Sevens. Such brilliant storytelling with twists and turns that leave you breathless. I love Laura’s books and this is her best yet Julie Owen Moylan, author of That Green Eyed Girl This is a brilliant read from this author. Perfectly plotted and completely mysterious. This is a book that really shows the author’s talent.

Cornwall, 1730: A young girl known only as Red travels with her father making a living predicting fortunes using the ancient Cornish method of the Square of Sevens. Shortly before he dies, her father entrusts Reds care to a gentleman scholar, along with a document containing the secret of the Square of Sevens technique. I loved Red's character, and I liked that we had several different people narrating this book, because you were left wondering: what was the truth? My favourite Laura Shepherd-Robinson novel yet. Fortune telling, Cornwall and Bath. What’s not to love? Completely compelling and clever, of course. And in Red, a heroine I wanted to spend days with Joanna Nadin, author of The Double Life of Daisy Hemmings I read this book immediately after finishing Laura's Daughters of Night which I thoroughly enjoyed. Sometimes it's a gamble - going in with such high expectations - but boy, is this book something!Pitch-perfect. Laura Shepherd Robinson has done it again- a beautifully strung novel quivering with just the right blend of pace, plot and historical detail. Bravo! — Victoria Selman, author of the bestselling Truly Darkly Deeply
