About this deal

Above: Side by side at 200mm with the RF lens on the left and the EF Mark II on the right shows them both delivering similarly-sharp results in the middle when wide-open, a result that also applies to the corners. Above: Next up the view at 135mm, starting with the RF 70-200mm f4 which in the middle again looks very sharp with no benefit to stopping-down further. Moving into the corners again reveals the excellent performance of the lens with crisp details at f4 and again little benefit to closing the aperture further. Because of the similarities in both the size and design of the 200-4R and the TH350, the 200-4R offers a much simpler update to a 4-speed overdrive transmission in your older car than the 700R4 does. Why Choose the 200-4R Transmission? Above: Now for them all at 200mm and using their maximum apertures, starting with the RF 70-200mm f4, followed by the RF 70-200mm f2.8 and finally the EF 70-200mm f4. Again with their coverage matched by cropping the RF images, with the EF 70-200mm f4 on the left, the RF 70-200mm f4 in the middle, and the RF 70-200mm f2.8 on the right, again all at 200mm and all at their maximum apertures. Do you have a preference? I quite like the softer edges on the older EF lens and the RF 2.8 models, but all look pretty good.

The 200-4R was a continuation of the Turbo Hydramatic line of GM transmissions, specifically being the successor of the TH200, a light-duty TH350 designed to improve fuel efficiency in the face of the oil embargo of 1973.Versus the 700R4, the fourth gear (overdrive) is slightly more aggressive, rotating at about 3% lower RPM and thus making for a more fuel-efficient transmission. Versus later electronic models (such as the 4L60E), the 200-4R is both more affordable and simpler to work with, although concerns around the integrity of the TV cable and difficulties that often arise when trying to adjustit are always factors to take into consideration. The first obvious reason is the purpose the car will be put to. Is it for drag racing or street ride? If it’s for drag, then you’re better off with 200-4R thanks to the closeness of its gear ratios. There are, however, two limitations to the 200-4R in this aspect. If you are looking for a way to upgrade your classic muscle car’s Powerglide or TH350, then you would be hard-pressed to find a better answer than the 700R4, or the 200-4R. Yet while the 700R4 is often seen as the more popular successor to the throne of the TH350, the 700R4 is not going to squeeze into every build, not is it necessarily the best fit for your car – especially if you are going forward with a lot of aftermarket work in mind. They have been beefed up in every possible way to be a better replacement to any car that uses the TH350, TH400, or generally, a muscle car. Fuel economy for which they were launched for has been up by 30 percent based on their real-life operation.

200/4 simplified, Reduce 200/4 to its simplest form

Is there any way of telling the 200-4R transmission from the 700R4 from the outlook? Definitely! You will need to rely on their pan bolt count and pattern. Above: As for the older EF Mark II lens, it’s still a fantastic performer as you’d expect for a fairly recent release. But during my tests I found the R5’s eye detection didn’t always drive it as consistently or accurately as it did with native RF lenses. I’ve noticed this with some other adapted EF lenses and if you’re manually focusing you might enjoy fractionally superior results, but from my experience when autofocusing with an EOS R body, you’ll enjoy a higher hit rate with greater accuracy and consistency with native RF lenses than adapted EF ones. Above: And finally the view at 200mm from the RF 70-200mm f4, and completing a story of excellent performance, you’ll see there’s sharp details in the centre which again don’t benefit from stopping-down, with that crispness extending into the corners. Obviously as a telephoto zoom, the depth of field can become quite shallow, so for landscapes you may prefer to stop-down, but these tests show the lens can perform very well when wide-open. Conversely, the 200-4R can be made to be stronger than the 700R4. It is, however, worthy to note that the 200-4R is popularly known as the weaker of the 200-4R/700R4 pair. Conclusion Telling a 700R4 apart from the 200-4R is thankfully quite easy, and doesn’t require you to look under the hood. The 200-4R comes with a unique-looking 16-bolt transmission pan, much like the 700R4 and 4L60 but completely different in design. The pans on the 700R4 and 4L60 are square, whereas the 200-4R tapers off on one side. The TH350, on the other hand, looks much like the 200-4R but comes with only 13 bolts.Reduced Fuel Consumption. Overdrive transmissions make better use of fuel because the car’s engine speed decreases when using overdrive gearing. In addition to having improved fuel efficiency, there is less wear and tear on the vehicle. vs. 700R4 transmissions are two four-speed automatics that are always compared side-by-side for their similarities, yet unique differences. They may have been released in the 1980s, but where one fails the other makes up for it. It’s also worthy to note that the 200-4R vs 700R4 strength has been improved from what they were a couple of years ago. Application Type The HD.S regulators are used in laboratories and production plants for calibration gases, carrier gases and high purity instrument gases

Minimum focusing distance is a little high for Version 1 (the one with a chrome-colored ring) at 1.6 m

In my experience, the various Vivitar Series 1 f/3.5 or f/2.8-4 are all good, with my 5th version (Q-DOS) best (unless you put it in Q-DOS mode, in which case it's terrible). My Kiron 70-210mm f/4, Minolta Beercan, Soligor C/D 80-200mm f/4.5, and Minolta MD 100-200mm f/5.6 are also all solid "A" performers although there are various differences. Which is the better option between the 200-4R vs the 700R4 transmission can be determined by a number of factors and these are: 1. Purpose of the Car I'm using sony A6000 and looking for a 80-200 f4 tele zoom lens. I found these 3 lens which fits to my target:

Above: And now to the corner where the RF is a little sharper, but there’s not much in it. Closing the aperture a stop or two makes them pretty much identical in the corner. Above: In my final test I’ll compare the RF 70-200mm f4L against the EF version with a distant subject and I’ve angled the camera so fine detail extends into the corners. I’m starting here with the RF 70-200mm f4L at 70mm f4, and taking a close look in the middle unsurprisingly reveals very crisp details as we’ve already seen from the portrait shots. Closing the aperture made no difference to the centre sharpness. Heading into the corner and you’ll see the details remain very sharp even wide-open, and again there’s little to no benefit to stopping-down, so the RF zoom is performing very well wide-open across the frame at 70mm. The 200-4R vs the 700R4 transmission comparisons show their strengths and weaknesses as well as their similarities and differences. The data above shows that the 200-4R’s 2.74 first gear is closer to the TH350 2.52’s first gear and even closer than the 700R4 (3.06). There is also the length of 27 11/16″, the width of 19 1/8″, and 27 spline output shaft being shared by both the TH350 and 200-4R. As a consequence, the 200-4R is a better replacement to the TH350 in comparison to the 700R4. Which Transmission Is Better? Above: Ok, now onto bokeh as the rendering of blurred areas is an important factor in a lens designed for portraits, events and close-range sports or wildlife. Let’s take a closer look at the rendering at 70mm using their maximum apertures. Since all were shot from the same distance, the EF is showing bigger magnification, so for a side-by-side I’ve cropped-in a little on the RF images to match the coverage. So here we have the EF 70-200mm f4 on the left, the RF 70-200mm f4 in the middle, and the RF 70-200mm f2.8 on the right, all at their maximum apertures. There’s no right or wrong here in terms of style, just personal preference, but the RF 70-200mm f4L in the middle is rendering sharper edges. Above: And now for the RF 70-200mm f4L again at 200mm and from exactly the same distance where the difference in magnification is quite striking. But the new RF lens can focus much closer, down to 60cm from the focal plane. The 200-4R transmission is one among several other transmissions manufactured by General Motors, an American multinational corporation based in Detroit. The transmission was launched in 1981 for the year’s model car and it is the lesser of the duo overdrive transmissions that were launched around the same time.
