About this deal

Onome’s experiences navigating a white campus as a black student will be relatable for many young readers today, and the lessons she learns can provide guidance and support to the readers who identify with her. A Letter Away From Asaba is a thought-provoking narrative centred on the Asaba Massacre, which occurred in 1967 during the Nigerian Civil War.

It grapples with a plethora of themes relevant to modern day Nigeria and the role of the press across the world.

International Women’s Day also gives us an opportunity to recognise the inner and outer work we all need to do to achieve gender equality for all women, regardless of where they come from. You’ll hear from them in their own words about their experiences, ambitions, insights, and any advice they’d give to fellow women seeking to leave the planet better than they found it.

I am happy to share that I have been offered the position as Culture Editor at The McGill Daily, an independent student newspaper at McGill University that has been in operation since 1911. I think that this is the perfect book for educating people on Asaba as well as the other important topics covered in this book such as covering up from the British Government and Onome’s experiences as one of few black students at the university. I am so thrilled to announce that my debut novel ‘A Letter Away From Asaba’ will be published in spring 2023.Claudia Efemini has created something that everyone should read, if only to learn a pivotal part in Nigerian history.

As she struggles to deal with the horrific and ceaseless deaths surrounding her, she takes sanctuary in receiving letters from her oldest friend, Onome, who is studying law at Kings College in London. I would have liked some more background about their relationship together and how they have grown - we get to know them when they are adults and see that relationship go through ups and downs, which is great.

Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. In A Letter Away From Asaba, Efemini makes it known that history does not remain a thing of the past. This is far from easy, and they await a series of hurdles in ways they least expect that, in contrast, try to ensure that the victims of the massacre die in vain.

Nevertheless, I cannot deny that the general neglect of African history during my first two years has only made me hungrier for history pertaining to Nigeria. A Letter Away from Asaba is an epistolary novella that speaks on history, that has effected so many, through letters sent by our main protagonists Chioma and Onome. Accessed via “Nigeria’s civil war 50th anniversary, a reflection”, The Guardian, 5 February 2020: https://guardian.When such horrifying events like wars and massacres occur, it is all too easy to become overwhelmed by the brutal deaths, and often the sheer number of them.
