About this deal

In the story, their great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Robbie McLeod, talks about his childhood. After being orphaned, his cruel uncle had looked after him; to escape the abuse, Robbie ran away into the woods. He found a male wolf pup who, similarly, had also been orphaned, and looked after him, naming it Charlie. A few days later, Robbie and Charlie made their way to America in hopes of a better life, but they were disillusioned; in America, there had been a war between the redcoats and the rebels. They encountered life-threatening situations. In the wilds of the Scottish Highlands, Robbie McLeod is on the run from the English Redcoats. On his furtive travels he finds a tiny wolf cub – and a sign proclaiming the killing of the last wolf in Scotland. Immediately identifying with the abandoned orphan, Robbie adopts the cub, and a powerful loyalty grows between them. But when Robbie flees his homeland and seeks his fortune in the New World, has the time come for the wolf to find a newer, freer home too? Written by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman, this gem of a story sweeps readers from eighteenth century Europe right across the Atlantic. Michael Morpurgo discovered his talent for writing while working as a teacher. “We had to read the children a story every day and my lot were bored by the book I was reading. I decided I had to do something and told them the kind of story I used to tell my kids – it was like a soap opera, and they focused on it. I could see there was magic in it for them, and realised there was magic in it for me.”

It tells the story of Robbie McLeod and an orphaned wolf cub that the boy finds and vows to take care of. Both Robbie and the wolf cub are in mortal danger - Robbie is fleeing from the slaughter of the battle fields of Culloden Moor, and the wolf from the hunters driving the species to extinction. The Last Wolf is a 2002 children's book written by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman. It won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Bronze Award. [1] Plot [ edit ] After reading the story, Miya and her grandfather decide to travel to America to see where Robbie and Charlie lived. As the years passed, Charlie's temperament naturally became wilder and more animalistic. Robbie noticed the change in Charlie and, reluctantly, let him go. He built a farm next to a lake where he occasionally saw Charlie. A couple years later, Robbie got married and had a son named Alan. The last time Robbie saw Charlie, Charlie had also started a family of his own. Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.”

Robbie's story is a sad one. Orphaned as a baby, Robbie lived with his uncle, a violent, abusive man. As soon as he was old enough, he ran away from his uncle's farm and spent years on the run, stealing to feed himself. Inside, Robbie knew that the life of an itinerant petty thief was not for him, but he saw no way of extricating himself from that downward spiral. Until one day, he met a loving couple, Sean and Mary, who are unable to have children of their own. Sean and Mary took Robbie into their home and treated him as their own son. Under their kind care, Robbie flourished. But sadly, his happiness did not last. Robbie's Scotland was the Scotland of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Sean died at the battle of Culloden and Mary died at the hands of the brutal English soldiers. A fugitive once more, Robbie discovered an orphaned wolf cub and together they evaded the vicious redcoats, for at this time wolves were hunted down by the English in the same way as were the Jacobite rebels. Boy and wolf discovered a remarkable bond and together they needed to find a way to flee the country... The charismatic Prince sweeps through Scotland calling men to arms as he goes, and Robbie joins them. At Culloden the Scots are overwhelmed by the English, and Robbie runs for his life from the field of battle. Robbie McLeod has the misfortune to be orphaned at a very young age and is brought up for a while by his heartless uncle. He is also born into a difficult age, being young and idealistic, in Scotland, at the time of the Jacobite Uprising in 1745.
