Resistant' cultivarsare available, although the rust can usually adapt to and overcome this resistance. ‘Coronette’, ‘Monarch’ and ‘Tahiti’ series have all been claimed to be resistant. Chemical control The spores of the fungus are spread by rain-splash, and warm, wet conditions are ideal for infection. In the Mediterranean such conditions occur in autumn and winter, but in the UK temperatures during spring and summer are more suitable. Distorted leaves are often the first sign of infection, especially with the larger-leaved cultivars. A grey/mauve felt-like 'fungal' growth appears on the under-surface of the leaves, with diffuse purple-red or yellow patches developing on the corresponding upper surface.

Can Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus prevent fungal diseases from coming back?

Most powdery mildew fungi have a host range restricted to a relatively few, related plants, but these can include wild relatives which can be sources of infection, e.g. wild crab apples may be sources of infection for apple orchards.

Occasionally, overwintering resting spores are produced by antirrhinum rust, but these are relatively unimportant and the fungusprincipally survives from one year to the next on infected plants. Under favourable, wet conditions the disease can build up rapidly and is often unnoticed in the early stages because it usually starts on the lower leaves. Like many rusts, the full life cycle requires alternation between two unrelated plant hosts, but in Europe only the stages on antirrhinums occur. Downy mildewrequires cool wet weather for infection and spread. The 'fungal' growth seen on the underside of the leaves produces large numbers of asexual spores.Downy mildews are host-specific, so for example thedowny mildew affecting a Veronica will not infect a rose or vice versa. The fungus Discula destructiva causes extensive damage in North America to the native Cornus species, which are an important landscape feature. The disease is known there as anthracnose and was first noted in the 1970s. The fungus is not thought to be native to North America, but its origins are unknown. It was first detected in the UK in the late 1990s and was probably introduced accidentally on infected plant material.A white powdery fungal growth on the surface of leaves, buds, petals and shoots of roses and many other plants. The foliage may become discoloured, heavily infected young leaves may be curled and distorted, and the plant’s vigour may be reduced. powdery mildew ( Podosphaera fuliginea) and grey mould ( Botrytis cinerea).

There are no fungicides available to amateur gardeners with activity against downy mildewor grey mould. The fungicides tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate), tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, ToproseFungus Control and Protect), and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are labelled for the control of a number of other diseases on ornamental plants, and may give some control of olive scab on olive trees grown as ornamental plants only, although this is not claimed by the manufacturers. Prolonged leaf wetness is not required for infection by p owdery mildew, but high humidity is, so providing good air circulation is still important. Avoid drought stress and the overuse of nitrogenous fertilisers. Chemical controlThe fungicide tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, Toprose Fungus Control & Protect) has a recommendation for the control of leaf spots on ornamental plants. Additionally, the fungicides tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate) and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are labelled for the control of other diseases on ornamental plants, and could therefore be used legally on Cornus(at the owner’s risk) to try and control anthracnose. Then rinse sprayer thoroughly after use and dispose of washings safely by pouring onto bare soil. Once the bottle is empty, RINSE CONTAINER THOROUGHLY before disposal by manually rinsing three times. This can be done by filling the dosing chamber with clean water, replacing the cap and tipping the water into the bottle. Repeat steps 1 – 4 above to add washings to sprayer at time of filling and dispose of empty container safely.

Edibles:Tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (ProvantoFungus Fighter Plus) can be used on glasshouse crops of cucumber, courgette and summer squash. Sulphur (Mildew Clear for Edibles) can be used on grapevines, gooseberries, cucumbers, peas and a wide range of root and tuber vegetables (full details on label). In many cases the affected tissues show little reaction to infection in the early stages, but in a few specific cases, for example on Rhamnus, the infection provokes a strong colour change in the infected parts, which turn a purple-brown colour No fungicides are available to gardeners for use on olive trees from which the fruit will be harvested and consumed. Prompt removal of infected leaves early in the season may delay the build-up of the disease slightly, although weather conditions havethe greatest influence over the speed of spread. Dispose of plants at the end of the season. Provide good drainage, but water regularly during dry periods (plants suffering from regular but intermittent drought-stress are more susceptible). Application of mulch may help water retention

Apply no more than four times per year on roses and ornamentals and no more than six times per year on box trees. How to Use Pour liquid from the dosing chamber into the sprayer and make up to 1 litre with water. Replace cap The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. Non-chemical control Pour liquid from the dosing chamber into the sprayer and make up to 1 litre with water. This will treat a lawn area of up to 20m²
