About this deal

Previously editor of Wareable, he also co-ran the features and reviews sections of T3, and has a long list of bylines in the world of consumer tech sites. We weren't especially concerned about the 36g weight of these sport-centric headphones, but we did have a small problem with the head-band, which is rather loose. But we did find they were a little uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time, so consider more expensive alternatives if your budget can stretch. At least on the face that we tested them on, the Trekz Air sat comfortably within a small dimple area at the top of the jawbone. If our Shokz OpenRun review has you considering other options, here are three more workout headphones you might want to check out.

Hopefully that’ll change in the future because there’s definitely an opportunity for others to push bone conduction tech even further. You just have to be willing to plug your ears up, which does pretty much defeat the purpose of open ear headphones. Add a six-hour battery life and a rather loose neck-band that causes them to slip slightly when exercising, and the AfterShokz Titanium is left looking like a novelty product that needs some work.

AfterShokz Trekz Titanium wireless headphones review

As a veteran leader in the bone conduction headphones market, I expect AfterShokz to deliver great build quality. The loud environment competed with my music from my ear’s attention, resulting in a disruptive experience. With the Shokz OpenRun—originally known as the AfterShokz Aeropex—it’s managed to wrap that tech in something that’s slimmer and more durable, all while adding new bone conduction tech to improve sound quality. The OpenMove headset is symmetrical in design, with the only visible difference being the volume buttons and charging socket on one side, and the multi-purpose power button on the other. It’s the XTRAINERZ, a different model of AfterShokz, that has the download capability from your Computer, instead of a Bluetooth source for music.

AfterShokz doesn’t think so, which is why its athlete-focussed Titanium open-ear sport headphones do the exact opposite. It's a very likable sports headphone, particularly for people who want a secure fitting headphone that doesn't cover or prod their ears. Including the cheaper Trekz Air headphones, which launched back in 2017, and the upgraded Shokz OpenRun Pro, which came out in early 2022. If you're not sold on bone conduction headphones and simply need a way to listen to music as you run or workout, then take a look at the Beats PowerBeats Pro instead. As a result, OpenMove was created with familiar features reminiscent of Titanium and a few additions that make a fair case for an upgrade.

While that does mean you now have to keep hold of another proprietary charging cable (there’s actually two in the box), the move has meant Shokz can offer that increased waterproof rating to give the OpenRun that durability boost. Another difference between the OpenMove and other Shokz headsets is that its earpieces are equipped with magnets, which cause them to snap together neatly when you remove it. These are connected by a thin band that hooks over your ears and curves around the back of your head.

With nothing in your ears, these near-ear bone conduction speakers offer a genuinely new way of listening to music. We're also concerned about the short battery life, which at six hours makes them of limited use as everyday headphones. If we’re talking about sound quality, then the OpenRun don’t go leaps and bounds beyond they're predecessors, though they do show some subtle improvements, particularly in terms of clarity and bass.

However, the soft silicon covering together with the careful positioning of the electronics means that the Trekz Air tend to stay in one place, however active. If you’re using tailor’s measuring tape, align the left side of the measuring tape behind your left ear in the same way.Great around the office, the gym and out on a run, these bone conduction earphones that sit outside the ear are so comfortable you forget you're wearing them. By blocking your ears the sound you get from the headphones not only becomes louder but improves overall, the bass in particular. The bone conduction effect is one of bass, but at the high volumes necessary in busy city centres, or anywhere with strong winds, these strong vibrations are a little too much. Shokz quotes a battery life of around six hours for the OpenMove (the same as the Air, and two hours less than the OpenRun.
