About this deal

I continue to be fascinated by the extraordinary range that Gallico has in his writing, from dark to frothy, poignant to funny, and (indeed) very good to not at all good. I think these two books have filled me with the most delight and genuine enjoyment of all the books I’ve read in 2021 so far. It is light and funny in the beginning and heart-breaking in the end; the film adaptation, curiously, is the other way round: very sad in the beginning, but with an ending that's much less depressing. The film was produced by Lansbury's production company Corymore Productions, and directed by Lansbury's son, Anthony Shaw.

Nothing is simple, but her unabashed friendliness, her concern for others and her naivety mean that she ends up spending a week sightseeing in Paris, aids one of her new-found friends in his love life, helps to solve Mme Colbert’s unhappiness, and attends fittings for her dress.I'm struggling to finish this audiobook, I love the story but the heavy breathing noises are very distracting, I couldn't use headphones, I have to listen in my phone with very low volume.

Harris before, she is a no-nonsense, salt-of-the-earth charlady, who (in the first book) unexpectedly develops an all-abiding passion to own a Christian Dior dress like the one she has seen in the wardrobe of one of the women for whom she works. Clothes here don't just bestow status or beauty, although that's certainly a crucial part of their function, but the right kind of visibility.I can never have enough of her’ Justine Picardie’It is almost impossible not to succumb to Gallico’s spell’ Times Literary SupplementMrs Harris is a salt-of-the-earth London charlady who cheerfully cleans the houses of the rich.

In the Paris book, an ageing char lady decides she wants a Dior dress and makes a lot of friends and changes lives along the way. A second novella is included in this edition, Mrs Harris Goes to New York, and I liked that it included a bit of romance for Mrs Harris. I’ve finished so few books lately, and have been so dissatisfied with the number of reviews I’ve been able to post, that I have turned to the small pile of books I finished months and months ago, but never quite got around to reviewing.Arris Goes to Paris, and republished together recently by Bloomsbury, with its aspirate in place), Mrs. Unlike the lovely but rackety TV movie starring Angela Lansbury in 1992, this is a lavish affair that has been produced with the full co-operation of Dior. Mrs 'Arris moved from one mess, slop, and untidy house to the next a half a dozen times a day, only leaving when the place was immaculately neat, clean, and sweet smelling. The new screen adaptation of Paul's novel stars Lesley as Ada, Isabelle Huppert as Claudine Colbert, Lambert Wilson as Marquis de Chassagne and Jason Isaacs as Archie, among others.

His first major book was Farewell to Sport, which as the title indicates, was his farewell to sports writing. Full of wonderful secondary characters, and some not so wonderful, it all makes for a very charming and delightfully fun read.

His novella titled The Snow Goose in 1941 rocketed him to the best-selling author list and many of his works have been adapted for motion pictures. In the second novella Mrs Harris and the whole crew of sidekicks sail away to America where everything comes to a perfectly delightful conclusion after various problems and setbacks are resolved.
