About this deal

But the author’s insistence on bringing God (or spirituality) into the books by way of a lesbian vicar just doesn’t work for me. I mean - I am not a country girl myself, but I wouldn’t make a tit out of myself so badly in said setting. This kicks off a chain of events you do not see coming, a clever storyline with enough twists and turns to make you dizzy. The careful grafting of Ruth Blum's story on to Yves's own, and the eventual uniting of these two complementary threads, is tenderly and affectionately worked out, and the novel champions the idea of an essential shared humanity that can bridge extreme cultural divides. Welcome to Wensleydale, where the cheese is famous, the scenery beautiful, and the locals have murder on their minds.

Hopefully, the author will reveal where Richard Askew got his source from in subsequent books in the series. Gatward’s Harry Grimm books are not great literature, but they’re entertaining “English rural” police stories. Not long after, another farmer – one of the first victim’s few friends – is found drowned to death in a slurry pit. I am very impressed with the author’s ability to describe the setting and to create such a likable, flawed, and intelligent protagonist, Harry Grimm.I was intrigued immediately as I read the first page and was so happy I had the three books together. Long passages about the village which were fine but repetitive after 80 pages of hearing about the bloody cake and cheese and tea. There is some violence and a few bloody details, but just enough to describe the situation (not too much). Although the solving of the crime is collaborative like a police procedural, Harry is the star who does a little more crime-solving than the rest of the police team, so it is more of a cop mystery.

Harry is a city boy and he doesn't know what to make of his new assignment in a more rural location. Blood Sport is plagued by a few misspellings and typos, but is nevertheless quite enjoyable to read.

I will say that the author did a great job making Harry seem like was such a fish out of water and his description of how lovely the Yorkshire Dales are, I also like Harry and his team together and finding the answers wasn’t just about him. I loved Aubreys Dalesman accent for the people of Hawes, it wasn't over the top Yorkshire accent, to me it sounded just like our ex next door neighbour who was a true Dalesman. The team must figure out the complicated issue of what happened, who was actually involved, and where was Sophie?

Gatward's description of the sittings of Grimm Up North, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book plot. Although his two daughters, his son-in-law, and his grandson have rallied around him, he’s profoundly depressed. They didn't trace Sophie's phone or texts, they didn't go to her school and speak to anyone about her. Grimm Up North is the first book in the DCI Harry Grimm crime thriller series, set in the Yorkshire Dales. Set in North Yorkshire; its protagonist is Harry Grimm who is a Bristol-based detective chief inspector attached to the homicide-related Major Investigation Team.

While the plot unfolds with engaging momentum, there are instances where the pacing stumbles, momentarily disrupting the immersive experience. He appears very good at his job of nailing villains but, because of his attitude, gets posted to the wilds of rural Yorkshire as a punishment. In the middle of the night he’s seen driving off, and the next day his body is found in a field near his crashed Porsche, his head literally blown off by a shotgun.

Ltd this edition was printed in 1909 after illustrator Rackham spent 10 years reworking the 40 illustrations into colour.
