This is an outstanding book for fans of humorous fantasy. Olivia Atwater has a new fan in me and I want more. Disclaimer: I am not friends with the author. I wish I were, though. There weren't a lot of things I disliked about Small Miracles, but there were even fewer that I really liked and that sums up my experience for this.. Small Miracles charmed me with its simple, effortlessly funny story and likable characters. It's whimsical, often amusing, and there is hardly a dull moment. This is so far outside of my wheelhouse that I'm not going to rate it, as it would be unfair to do so. This book focuses on Gadriel (not to be mistaken for Gabriel), a fallen angel of petty temptations, who has strong views on chocolate not being a sin. As a favor for their heavenly sibling, Barachiel, Gadriel agrees to tempt Holly Harker to sin some, which sounds simple enough, but we know things are never simple. As Gadriel tries to figure out what is going on, they get to discover some long-lost parts of themselves.

Although there is no impending, world-ending disaster lurking in “Small Miracles”– this is considerably lighter fare. But its lightness doesn’t mean it’s not a worthwhile, intriguing book. Were Pratchett alive, I dare to hope he’d agree with my rating, if he read the book, which according to Atwater, is somewhat of a homage to his “Good Omens”.

If you want to recapture the feeling of someone reading a faerie tale to you when you were young, but you also want to read stories which challenge you a bit and make you think… that’s what I think Intisar’s books manage to do. They’re just beautiful. In 1990, two iconic fantasy authors, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, collaborated to write the famed novel “Good Omens” (full title: “Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch”. Let me start by saying I was amused and entertained throughout Small Miracles. The idea of a Fallen Angel of Petty Temptation who fell from grace because of their own gambling problem is quite charming. Gadriel, said fallen angel, is in deep with their bookie, Barachiel, the Angel of Good Fortune. Atwater sold the English rights of the Regency Faerie Tales to Orbit Books, who re-released all three novels in 2022. [7] That same year, she published Small Miracles, [2] an homage to Good Omens (1990) by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. [18] Writing for The New York Times, Olivia Waite recommended the novel, likening it to Pratchett's work. [19] Small Miracles won the eight edition of the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off. [20] Writing style and technique [ edit ] Atwater was influenced by Terry Pratchett ( pictured).
