Phenylephrine overdosage is likely to result in effects similar to those listed under advserse reactions. Additional symptoms may include hypertension and possibly reflux bradycardia. In severe cases confusion, hallucinations, seizures and arrhythmias may occur. However the amount required to produce serious phenylephrine toxicity would be greater than required to cause paracetamol-related toxicity. The product should be avoided during lactation unless recommended by a healthcare professional. There are limited data on the use of phenylephrine in lactation. The product should not be used during pregnancy unless recommended by a healthcare professional (see section 4.6).Combination products are marketed as comprehensive cold-fighting remedies, but the main benefit is convenience. shoppingListJS = new ShoppingListJS({storeId: '11352',catalogId: '28501',langId: '-1'}, {id: '9354', name: 'Boots Pharmaceuticals Max Strength Cold & Flu Relief Lemon Flavour powder for Oral Suspension- 10 Sachets', image: '/wcsstore/null/image not defined', type: 'ItemBean', components: {}, skus: []}, {}, "shoppingListJS"); Don't take Beechams cold & flu sachets if you're taking any of the following medicines, because the combination may increase your blood pressure: In a study of healthy controls fasted overnight the T max for an equivalent product compared to two tablets of standard paracetamol was 20 minutes versus 35 minutes (p=0.0865). However, the speed to achieve 10 μg/ml for the product was faster than a standard paracetamol (17 minutes versus 30 minutes). Paracetamol - Is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is metabolised in the liver and excreted in the urine, mainly as glucuronide and sulphate conjugates.

The antidiabetic medicines exenatide, lixisenatide and liraglutide may slow down the absorption of paracetamol into the bloodstream, so it might take longer to work if you're using one of these medicines to treat your diabetes. Treatment with activated charcoal should be considered if the overdose has been taken within 1 hour. Plasma paracetamol concentration should be measured at 4 hours or later after ingestion (earlier concentrations are unreliable). Treatment with N-acetylcysteine may be used up to 24 hours after ingestion of paracetamol, however, the maximum protective effect is obtained up to 8 hours post-ingestion. The effectiveness of the antidote declines sharply after this time. If required the patient should be given intravenous N-acetylcysteine, in line with the established dosage schedule. If vomiting is not a problem, oral methionine may be a suitable alternative for remote areas, outside hospital. Management of patients who present with serious hepatic dysfunction beyond 24h from ingestion should be discussed with the NPIS or a liver unit.Medical advice should sought, if symptoms worsen, persist for more than 7 days, or are accompanied by high fever, skin rash or persistent headache. However, not all cold and flu remedies have good evidence behind them, and you could save time and money by avoiding the ones you don't need. If you're interested in getting vaccinated against flu this winter, you can pay for vaccination at a number of pharmacies including those at some supermarkets.

Symptoms of paracetamol overdosage in the first 24 hours are pallor, nausea, vomiting, anorexia and abdominal pain. Liver damage may become apparent 12 to 48 hours after ingestion. Abnormalities of glucose metabolism and metabolic acidosis may occur. In severe poisoning, hepatic failure may progress to encephalopathy, haemorrhage, hypoglycaemia, cerebral oedema, and death. Acute renal failure with acute tubular necrosis, strongly suggested by loin pain, haematuria and proteinuria, may develop even in the absence of severe liver damage. Cardiac arrhythmias and pancreatitis have been reported.

Paracetamol overdose may cause liver failure which may require liver transplant or lead to death . Liver damage is possible in adults who have taken 10g or more of paracetamol. Ingestion of 5g or more of paracetamol may lead to liver damage if the patient has risk factors (see below). Bear in mind that there's no 'cure' for the common cold, so it's more about managing symptoms to help you feel better. Similarly, cold and flu sachets can have a high sodium content and are generally not suitable for people on a low sodium diet. Beechams cold & flu sachets contain two active ingredients, the painkiller paracetamol (600mg) and a decongestant called phenylephrine hydrochloride (10mg). The powder in the sachets is dissolved in hot water to make a hot drink.

You could get the same effect more cheaply by taking a painkiller and drinking a cup of tea or coffee, especially as the evidence is weak for the decongestant element (see more on decongestants below). Paracetamol: Paracetamol has both analgesic and antipyretic activity which is believed to be mediated principally through its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis within the central nervous system. Some people - including over 65s, those with certain chronic health conditions, and pregnant women - are entitled to the flu vaccination for free on the NHS. This can be done either via your GP or at a pharmacy.

Caution is advised if paracetamol is administered concomitantly with flucloxacillin due to increased risk of high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA), particularly in patients with severe renal impairment, sepsis, malnutrition and other sources of glutathione deficiency (e.g. chronic alcoholism), as well as those using maximum daily doses of paracetamol. Close monitoring, including measurement of urinary 5-oxoproline, is recommended. Patients should consult a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms persist for more than 3 days, or worsen.
