About this deal

I probably liked this book because I like d sandwiches, so found the idea of a giant one quite appealing. Somehow, despite the presence of this image, which is really, really disgusting when you think about it:

The jam sandwich bit was a notion that when I was young, my dad, if we ever had a picnic, always used to put some strawberry jam away from the picnic to attract wasps from where we were settled. A lot of ideas are anecdotes from your own life; you can exploit them and bring them into fantasy. John Vernon Lord (Photograph: ONCA) Move over, Monsanto. There’s a new bug killer in town, and it comes in the form of a massive jam sandwich. That’s the premise of The Giant Jam Sandwich ( public library) , a hilarious children’s book that chronicles an epic battle between man and insect with a larger-than-life solution. This one-of-a-kind story by author and illustrator John Vernon Lord captures the imagination of children and adults alike, and the quirky illustrations are quite unlike anything in modern children’s literature. If you are using jam and it is not smooth, warm it slightly in a small pain, then press through a sieve to remove any lumps. Let it cool completely. Spread 2 tbsp jam on to each of the whole biscuits, and dust those with heart-shaped holes with icing sugar.

My thoughts: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this one. It is so much fun. I love the rhythm and rhyme of it. From cover to cover it just works. Not all books written in rhyme do work. Some seem to struggle a bit here and there. This one is practically perfect in every way. You were a student of John Vernon Lord’s when he led the School of Design at Brighton University. What was that like? OMG! How have I not known about this book? This is a story about giant food and it beat 'Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs' by 4 years. This book enchanted me and has been soaked in Cupids arrow juice for I fell in love with this story. It is so cute, so whimsical, and surreal.
