About this deal

Sadly, the detachable side grips don’t do much aside from giving you access to the weight system, and SteelSeries tells us it doesn’t have any plans for different grip shapes or added buttons for the time being. Though the Rival 600 doesn’t feature much of SteelSeries’ new two-tone look as seen on its earlier mice, there’s more use of soft touch finishes all over the exterior of this peripheral. What’s more, the two sides you’ll be gripping the most are lined with seriously soft pieces of rubber, ensuring a comfortable and firm grip. The mouse features silicon grips and a soft-touch finish. SteelSeries claims the mouse is compatible with both "claw" and "palm" grips, so it should please gamers of both camps. I'm personally a claw-grip gamer, so I paid close attention to whether this shape is satisfactory or not. It also features an innovative adjustable weight system, RGB lighting, and is for right-handed gamers only. Let's dive in: The Rival 600 sports 8-zone RGB lighting, which is a lot for a mouse, and though your hand covers it up most of the time it looks pretty cool when it's sitting on your desk. You can change the lighting easily in the included software, which I'll cover more in-depth below. The lighting ties into GameSense apps similar to SteelSeries keyboards. Also the non-braided USB cable can be detached from the front of the mouse for easy transport.

The SteelSeries Engine software plays a rather large role in the daily life of this mouse, though you can obviously adjust your settings and never open it again if you have it the way you like it. The software is divided into several sections: basic settings, illumination, and Engine Apps.On the other hand, the weights themselves are a mixed bag. There are eight steel, 4-gram weights, and you can slide them into eight slots, four on each side. You can keep the mouse light and fast, give it some heft, or even favor one side over the other. All the settings are very easy to figure out and intelligently organized. It should be noted you can also make adjustments to the three buttons on the left side of the mouse too. The fine-tuning adjustments are a bit much for casual users, but hardcore players will appreciate the powerful tweaking options available. I fiddled with DPI settings, lift-off, and mouse acceleration but left the rest as-is, which proved sufficient for casual play. The mouse has some onboard memory too, so whatever settings you apply are saved to the mouse in case you have to plug it into a foreign computer, which is a nice touch. As someone who likes a really heavy mouse, this writer loves fully loading up the Rival 600 for a steadier shot. Of course, you’re welcome to add however many you want – up to 256 different combinations that will also change the balance of the mouse.

The illumination settings window gives you a ton of interesting options for changing the mouse's lighting, as it has eight different zones that can be adjusted individually. The software gives you several presets that include: Steady, ColorShift, Multi Color Breathe, Reactive Key and disabled. You can select any of the lighting zones to have the presets applied, or just one or two. This allows you to make some pretty interesting color combinations as you can have color breathe on the logo, for example, but everything else a different color, or using a different effect. If you already have other SteelSeries gear, you'll be able to sync the Rival 600 very easily with that equipment, so it's a smart investment. Otherwise, consider the G502 as well; the weights snap into place better, and the software is just a little bit easier to wrangle. I don't have a definitive recommendation between the two, so it's safe to say that you can't go wrong either way. My second impression is that the base is wide enough that it seems more suited to people that are palm-grippers as opposed to claw grip aficionados. I prefer a claw grip and the wide base made my fingers flare out just a tad more than I would have liked. It's still comfortable, but just a few millimeters wider than I would have liked. It's a good balance though, and like SteelSeries claimed the design should please both camps, but I think palm-grippers will be happier with this mouse than claw-grippers.Speaking of the sides, they’re removable on the Rival 600, revealing the extensive customizable weight system. Out of the box, this mouse weighs 96g – that’s fairly average for a gaming mouse. With the optional set of eight extra 4g metal bits (an extra 32g in total), you can bring the total weight up to 128g. SteelSeries gaming mice are designed for ergonomic, ambidextrous, and right-handed gamers and have customizable weight and balance for every gamer style. The color changing LED feature and programmable buttons make SteelSeries RGB gaming mice a must have PC gaming accessory. The Rival 600 features six different lighting zones, but the program selects only one of them by default. As such, you could be toying around with a lighting pattern for quite a while before realizing that it applies only to the scroll wheel. It's easy enough to copy patterns, but it still requires some trial and error that you won't encounter with comparable programs from Razer, Logitech or Corsair.

As far as the lighting goes, it looks great when you're just looking at it from across the room, but as you can imagine when you're using the mouse you can't see any of it, so it's one of those features that is nice to have but not something that really adds to the gaming experience at all. The same goes for all the Engine apps too. I'm not sure why or how anyone would use these to get notifications.
