About this deal

Enjoy consistent performance and reliability. When you require critical color correction in visible, UV, or infrared spectrum or when your project demands critical color light attentuation, enjoy optimum results with WRATTEN 2 Optical Filters. Should you use a protective filter? If you’re going to worry that the front element of your lens might become damaged, then use a filter. Worrying about your lens takes your concentration away from image making. Rembrandt: "But this is the third time I've painted this portrait! Always time to do another painting but never enough time to light one more candle..." Linear and circular polarizing filters are two types of polarizing filters. A linear polarizer is not suitable for DSLR cameras because it can result in metering errors. Because of the construction of circular polarizers, they have no negative consequences for metering. You will most likely end up with an overexposed subject if you take a photo at 1/250 of a second with a flash on a sunny day. It is possible to apply neutral density filters in a circular or rectangular manner. Because a rectangular neutral density filter will not benefit you, it is best to avoid purchasing one. Because filter holders can be used with wide-angle lenses with focal lengths below 35mm, you should exercise caution when using them. To use the triangle, select the color of the contrast filter. That color will always be lightened. The other colors touching that color will be lighter. Colors not touching the filter will be darker. For example, if you use a red filter, it will lighten red, yellow, & magenta (the colors TOUCHING red). A red filter will darken green, cyan, and blue (the colors NOT touching red).

These filters balance light so the film records the scene the way your eye sees it. There are three main groups of filters in this category: the 81 series, the 82 series, and fluorescent filters. (Some companies may designate these filters differently.Filters can also be used to reduce reflections, protect your lenses from potential damage, reduce light entering the lens, and even increase color. Furthermore, filters can actually be harmful if not properly used. Why Filters Are A Waste Of Money

The following is the first of three articles on using filters. Part One discusses the main categories of filters used in photography, essentially camera filters explainedI've also seen "85" filters from still photography manufacturers that looked much browner then our customary Tiffen/Kodak "orange" filters. Another way of determining how the tones of a scene will be affected by contrast filters is to use Maxwell’s Triangle. Please refer to the sketch below. Some people find this is an easier way to remember how contrast filters impact tones.

Although they could not give us a definite "This is the reason why", the general consensus is the spectral sensitivity difference in the two films. How about the use of 85-C filters, that equals 1/2 of an 85? It converts 3,800K to daylight for use in late afternoon, when a full 85 conversion would be too warm. The 81 series of filters reduces the excessive blue when you’re photographing in the shade and adds “warmth” to a scene when you’re shooting in normal light. Like many filters, they’re made in a variety of strengths. The 81A has the weakest effect. As you proceed through the alphabet, the effect becomes stronger. A Nikon 85B filter is a filter used to correct the color balance of images taken under tungsten lighting. It is placed in front of the camera lens and allows only blue light to pass through to the sensor. This results in images that appear more natural, with accurate colors. I think we should all meet in Washington DC at mid-day for the Summer Solstice and at the exact time shoot filter tests. Your eye automatically makes the correction; the camera does not. A filter can correct the color so the eye and the camera see the scene in the same way. There will be some differences in look when you shoot without the 85 and have the lab correct it in printing. Without proper filter correction, your blues get over-exposed (or denser on the negative) and the reds gets under-exposed (or less dense.) Visually, this will make your reds less saturated, meaning that fleshtones will lose some of their color saturation (although this can be more pleasing in some cases.)

Colored filters, according to their name, are pieces of colored glass placed behind the camera’s lens. These filters change how the camera sees light, which is influenced by the color of the filter. In addition to enhancing reds and oranges, the blue filters play up the contrast between them. Red Filters For Low Light Photography Another example is shooting with daylight film in the early morning shade. This situation has a higher color temperature than daylight, so the film would record the scene with a bluish tint to it. The photo below on the left is a waterfall shot in heavy shade. Notice the blue tint to the image. Sometimes this can be used in a creative way to express the cool feeling of the water’s spray as it comes over the falls. The photo below on the right is the same scene using a filter to correct the color temperature. Filter However, some of the most important rules can be hard to break. For example, when composing a photo, it can be difficult to stray from what the light meter is telling you, if you want your image properly exposed. The thing is, even these extremely important rules about exposure can be broken. Our eyes and brains can compensate for different kinds of lighting conditions, for example an object viewed outside under the sun vs one viewed under a lightbulb. Whereas our cameras often can't make this differentiation, so our colour films need to be balanced to compensate for different types of lighting and to render colours as they would appear in the original scene. This is where filters come into play as they can help our cameras to adjust to different lighting conditions and balance out colours in the scene. Is the Nikon O56 filter an 85b? Is a Nikon O56 filter straight orange? What makes filter manufacturers agree on one standard code for filter colors? Can you see how much better “O56” communicates the color temperature correction factor than “85B”? There is no official Nikon A12 85a or 85b – but there is some confusion online. Filter designation is as important as designation of a Rosetta Stone. An illustration of a Wratten number chart on the left, followed by columns of manufacturers’ names, along with a description of the color. In units of 10 mireds, the Nikon number indicates the color temperature shift of the filter. Although filters may sound like ideal adjustments, they do come with certain disadvantages. ( The Advantages and disadvantages of specific filters will be discussed in Part 2 of this series.) Consider the following general problems: The 85A converts Type A tungsten film to Daylight lighting. The 85B filter converts Type B tungsten film to daylight lighting. Landscape photographers have discovered an additional use for the 85 series filters. Because they add a lot of warmth to an image, many photographers use them to enhance a sunset or other scene that might need more punch. One of the most common ways is using a filter to enhance a sunset or sunrise. There are special filters that will make a spectacular sunset out of a dull one. Consider the two images below. The one on the left was shot “as is.” Otherwise, the tint is hardly noticeable in a typical image. The UV filter is clear and reduces the excessive blue in haze, marine, and mountain scenes without adding tint. Light Balancing Filters:
