About this deal

You guys can stay with Aunt Bree and your cousins while Uncle Justin and I get the big stuff moved in. Even in a friends with benefits situation, characters can be (and have been) respectful of the other one. This couple has some of the best chemistry Melanie has ever written- and it's just so delightful since they are so different. They're so different: she really brings the sunshine to his grumpy life, and she becomes part of it, and his daughters'.

If I ever say I don’t like the single parent trope from this day forward, I give you all permission to slap me. Nothing is spoiled if you read Ignite first, each story is based on a different couple, but the events obviously build and you really get to know and fall in love with the characters, which is one of the many reasons why I love series. It was such a great break from all the dark romance that I have been reading and I adored the way this author wrote. She’s 22, he’s an asshole to her and she gives up her dream job to be saddled to his grouchy ass with his 2 kids and shit-tonne of baggage. And, lastly, the only aspect I actually liked about the book was when this dude fucked her with her sundress on and he ripped it and felt bad so he sewed it for her after. As a standalone book in a series of connected standalones, I was hesitant to start Winnie and Dex’s story as it takes place in the second generation of the series. Unwilling to go through that pain again, she makes a deal with her best friend: to prove her feelings don’t control her, Winnie vows to swear off love for the rest of the year. His overall moodiness was kinda understandable in my opinion- it’s kinda like when someone does all the right things (or so they think) but the pieces just don’t end up fitting very well - and that’s when some self reflection and self awareness would come in handy - Enter the heroine. Anyway, that was just one aspect that bothered me but I wanted to go into detail about it so that other people can understand my point 😭. After turning the apartment upside down and mopping her tears—“but you gave me that lucky penny on my first day of school last year and I need it for this year too or else I won’t be okay!

He also gives them desert before dinner and shit so he's known as the cool parent idk, and it's just so unfair. It’s so easy to get completely absorbed into the Cloverleigh world and just want to surround yourself with the characters, it feels like home. What I was wondering about,” she went on, pretending she hadn’t heard me—a particular skill of hers, possibly learned from her mother—“was did you have to wear boots at boot camp? It’s weird cause it was obvious but at the same time insignificant because they just fit so well together. Winnie, super romantic, decides that the 12 year age gap is not an issue, and works to help Dex see it too. They were both flawed and were trying hard to not hate each other and to make concessions where possible.

Dex and Winnie become neighbors and there is a connection and chemistry there, but Dex isn't looking for anything serious after his divorce. He lets his daughters get sunburnt because he chose to not reapply it for them and when Naomi confronts him about it, he says she's overreacting and invalidates her very valid concern for her children's health.

i mean, i get it, it sucks but weren't you the one that swore of men until december and when you decide to only keep it as friends with benefits, you knew you'd fall in love but you kept doing it anyway. But what I love most is the profound, yet simple, way Melanie uplifts the power of taking a risk on love.
