About this deal

If you teach someone to work hard when they're showered in praise, what do you think happens when you're not there to hand out the stickers? They were actually activating the insula, a part of the brain linked to integrating the significance of the sensations one experiences. This approach works from a life improvement perspective but may not be ideal from book review perspective, as my reviews can get colored by what I can extract from and incorporate from the book. The writing is broken into well-defined chapters, and each chapter into segmented writing with relevant headers at the top. There are also summaries at the end of every chapter, to help the reader reinforce what has just been covered.

And fulfilling our basic needs helps not only with well-being, but also with the ability to persist. I find mental toughness and the ‘harden up’ mentality so unhelpful and feels rather outdated when it is actually mental flexibility that helps athletes thrive in both performance and wellbeing. The introduction of the book uses stories to remind us of the definition of toughness that many of us have been brought up to believe. Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life.If I had known this was written by a pair of nineteen year olds, I probably wouldn't have bothered reading it. We’ve lost the ability to navigate our inner worlds, to sit with or navigate anything uncomfortable. I initially read this book to gain insights for my own distance running journey, and to consider how Magness's ideas relate to Jesus's/the Bible's view of toughness. Instead of fearing failure, “Do Hard Things” teaches us to embrace it, learn from it, and use it as a stepping stone towards success. this book is for you, my beautiful friends, tired of seeing the ya protagonists doing all the normal stuff one expects of rebellious standard useless teens.

What does a football player who learns to push himself only when a coach is screaming in his face do when it’s him alone on the field? It also highlights the significance of consistency and enjoying the journey towards achieving hard things.it was written by teens for teens and while it's all great to learn from adults talking about adult stuff to their adult audience there's something freaking special to hear this message from someone like you meant for YOU.

There are lots of additional approaches (Buddhism for example) that readers may want to explore in addition to the helpful ideas here. Also it kept referring over and over to the book Why buddhism is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment (SPOILER ALERT no it's not true) - like why the heck do I need to know excerpts from this book! Steve Magness makes a beautiful and compelling case for the value of inner strength over outer strength and humility over bluster.
