This 18 year old GlenDronach has been exclusively matured in the finest oloroso sherry casks from Andalucia in Spain. That gap of six years forces GlenDronach to use older whisky than necessary, because when Billy Walker acquired the distillery in 2008, he decided upon an extensive core range with age statements. The GlenDronach distillery was founded in 1826 – being one of the first licensed Scottish distilleries owned by BenRiach nowadays. Having tried this side by side with the rest of the range I'd say this is the best bang for buck, but it's not particularly cheap for an 18 year old whisky. The GlenDronach 18 Year Old has been named after the renowned founder of the distillery, James Allardice. I’ve made a Godard reference with GlenDronach before (with 15YO Revival), so I’ll continue with that theme since there’s a title that fits with this sherry matured whisky. As it morphs on the tongue, however, the nutty, dark fruit notes of the sherry cask stick around and mingle with an increasing tobacco and dry wood flavor.For example, the 12-year-old Original was first released in 2009, so should’ve been at least partly distilled in 1997. Nose: Kicking things off with the thinnest layer of gunpowder (which quickly disappears), quickly followed by cedarwood, blackcurrants, raisins and a handful of figs, accompanied by cigar tobacco, subtle notes of cappuccino, and a sliver of mint.
