About this deal

On records such as 2018’s tremendous Television Themes, Berry has shown his skill for drilling down into one idea over the course of an album but The Blue Elephant is perhaps the first time he’s pulled all of the different strands from across his recording careers into one record. Perhaps not coincidentally, the release also marks ten years since he signed to Acid Jazz and began the diverse career that has continually run parallel with his acting and writing. Here’s one of those albums where all you have to do is take a look at the cover and you know you want it! I refer to Matt Berry‘s forthcoming Television Themes.

The actor and writer is well known in the UK for his work on TV programmes like Toast of London, The IT Crowdetc., but Berry is also a talented and respected musician. As well as well as composing music for some of his own shows (and Steve Coogan’s brilliant Saxondale) he has released six studio albums, many of them on the Acid Jazz label (who will issue Television Themes). You will know Matt Berry from sitcoms such as The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and Toast Of London. And if you haven’t watched any of those (if not, why?) then you should recognise his distinctive voice from internet radio channel Absolute or TV ads for products as diverse as mineral water, jelly snakes and fruit yoghurts. But did you know he has a critically acclaimed musical career too? Milestone Celebration: Gather Up— a four-disc compilation that includes rarities and demos — was released in 2021 to coincide with ten years of Berry being signed to Acid Jazz. In 2019, Berry also starred in the IFC/Channel 4 sitcom Year of the Rabbit. Set in Victorian London, he plays the alcoholic Detective Inspector Rabbit. On 11 February 2020, the series was renewed for a second series of six episodes. Layla Smith, chief executive of the show's production company OMG, stated, " Year of the Rabbit is a victim of the devastating effects of COVID. [...] IFC are very committed to the show, but we will need to find another partner — and we're working on that." [34]
