About this deal

I broke my normal routine and poked around a few reviews since everyone but me loved this and I’ve noticed most don’t even mention him at all – despite him being a main character in the story. I loved to go there,” she says, “hang out for long periods of time while I sat in the dark and looked at jellyfish. The best books about grief find a way to illuminate the darkness of loss, and Remarkably Bright Creatures offers a masterclass. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. And like everyone else, I loved Marcellus and heard the “Sad Cat Diary” narrator each time he voiced a chapter that really brought a smile to my face .

But he's in Sowell Bay now, on the prowl to find out the secrets to his past, hoping what he finds will pay off, if possible. Though none of the animals in this story were harmed or ill-treated, you cannot help but feel sympathy for Marcellus when he feels imprisoned within the glass walls of the aquarium and misses his natural habitat. I went down the internet octopus rabbit hole, which is a fantastic place to be, and found out more about that octopus. A committed teacher tries to enlighten Demon’s seventh grade class about how the resource-rich countryside was pillaged and abandoned, but Kingsolver doesn’t air-brush his students’ dismissal of this history or the prejudice encountered by this African American outsider and his White wife. Cameron becomes convinced that if he can find him, Simon will have to pay for missed child support and solve all Cameron’s problems.Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. As his affection for Tova grows, Marcellus must use every trick his old, invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine, but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight tentacles for his human captors—until he forms an unlikely friendship with Tova.

Some outcomes were predictable, but I kept reading while enjoying this heartwarming and compelling book. Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel, REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES, will be published by Ecco/HarperCollins (US) and Bloomsbury (UK) in Spring 2022. Even if we can't keep something forever, we don't want to miss the chance of the time we can spend with those we can love and cherish. What he can’t do is escape from captivity in a small public aquarium in the fictional town of Sowell Bay, near Puget Sound. I think writing a book at that time could not have been anything other than this uplifting balm-for-the-soul type of story.

But the atmosphere quickly shifts from risqué to downright risky after two fellow working girls go missing.
