About this deal

There are ship-building mini-games, research tech trees, round-to-round upkeep costs that balance your action selection, throaty space battles with handfuls of dice, numerous alien species that offer novel permutations on starting abilities and weaknesses, and exploration of tiles that are unknown but invariably one of a handful of types found in the game. In the center is a big ‘ol space station on a hex that promises a bunch of victory points but can be difficult to defeat and then maintain.

Despite its flaws, Eclipse 2nd dawn is the more approachable format for players that fills that particular space epic itch without having your hair turn gray during a game. The production quality is outstanding, and the Game Trayz organizers are the Holy Grail for players who appreciate a functional and aesthetically pleasing insert- which is something that Twilight Imperium, over its various incarnations over 25 years, has yet to do for the convenience of its dedicated player base. Population Cubes represent the size of your civilization. When placed in Sectors, they produce resources. Colony ShipsMove – Exactly as you might think, you can move your ships a given number of systems (depending on their speed) to fortify your own space or invade others’. I’m a touch less enamored of combat, but I won’t deny that it’s easy enough to survey your opponents’ player board to gauge the relative strength of their ships, which helps to assess risk. Many other games have a lot of combat information hidden behind special ability cards or player screens. There’s an uncertainty there that can be exciting, but it also makes things less strategic.

Influence – You can add an influence token to a system next to one of your own. You can also remove a token from one of your systems if you think you might have overreached yourself. Purist fans of both games reel a bit at this comparison, and the majority of text below is spent parsing the differences between the two, and what gamer types might enjoy one more than the other. Again, this is a very streamlined game. It flows! But still takes about 2 hours for a two player game, more for more players. Still not as long as the other Big games out there. Star Wars Legion is a tabletop miniature board game that focuses on the Galactic Civil War. You will become the commander of a powerful army, including iconic characters like Luke Skywalker. Structures are permanent colossal objects built in your controlled Sectors. Monoliths give you extra victory points at the end of the game, whereas Orbitals provide an additional Population Square. Zones and Rings

Star Trek Catan

This all means that in the games I’ve played, combat tends to be a late game rush as various players finally decide that now is the time to throw around those fleets that they’ve been building up since turn one. Dawn? Or Sunset In my wife’s own words, I can tell if a game is good if she keeps on coming downstairs to the game from her at-home job to take turns all day long. Eclipse provided such an experience for her, despite her initial misgivings. Color me surprised. This is a 4X game (Exterminate, Ex-Lovers, Eggnog and Xylophone, as mentioned earlier) that will see you expanding and refining a space-based empire alongside your opponents.

The Galactic Center Sector should be placed in the middle of the table. Put a face-down Discovery Tile on the Galactic Center Sector’s Discovery symbol, with the Defense System (GCDS) miniature on top. On average, players take two, maybe three actions each round. However, if you want to stretch and go for broke, you can! Eclipse’s action economy is literally that: your civilization’s income/economy correlates directly to how many actions you can take.

What’s New in Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy?

I do wish the game still came with a central game board, as it can hard visually aligning the hexes without a reference. Yes it can be done, but it can be a little sore on the eyes of things don’t initially seem symmetrical during the initial game layout. Combat, while it still uses dice to determine hits and outcomes as is traditional, nevertheless manages to offer up something new in allowing a good advantage to the Defender in battle situations. Moreover, it is especially nice that while it is more typical in other games to have players trade hits and damage at the exact same time, in Eclipse, if you manage to destroy an enemy ship first, they will never even get a chance to fire at you! Place your Starting Sector in the zone closest to you, then fill all empty Starting Zones with randomly selected Guardian Sectors with the arrow facing GCDS. This brings us neatly to the combat. Unlike its heftier cousin, Eclipse: Second Dawn of the Galaxy isn’t actually that combat heavy. That’s down to a few reasons. Twilight Imperium's latest fourth edition released in 2017, 20 years after the sci-fi epic first hit tables.

If you don’t manage to raise enough funds to pay this cost, you’re eliminated from the game. That’s why it’s so important to keep a close eye on your finances at all times (something I’m terrible at in real life). Cleanup Phase Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy is an updated version of the highly popular game Eclipse, which came out in 2011. This new edition offers improved gameplay, revised graphic design, and additional components. The game lets players control an immense interstellar civilization that can be expanded and evolved through new technologies. I love Star Trek and Catan, so you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that a crossover board game exists! Star Trek Catan shares many similarities with Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy, except it contains fewer components and is way easier to learn. As you can tell, the creators of Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy have gone all-out with the details of the game! You can trade some resources for others by paying the number indicated by the Trade Value on your Species Board. Population Cubes Sci-fi as a genre is hugely popular, but in my experience, there aren’t many board games that capture the thrilling possibilities of space travel the same way a movie or TV show could.
