I don’t underestimate the privileged position I’m in when it comes to being able to get any expression of Springbank and at the RRP recommended by J & A Mitchell’s. In fact, it’s because of the nefarious practices of some retailers who were charging excessively over the RRP and who were subsequently deleted from getting allocations by Springbank that my local store gets the allocations they do. Looking for a dram to have in December to celebrate that thing that happens around the 25th? (It’s still October, so no I won’t say the banned word) 🎃 Kilkerran 5 yo 2015/2021 (57.3%, Cadenhead, Annual Shop Release 2021, Campbeltown, sherry hogshead, 306 bottles) - 230222 A cacophony of light, fruity flavours. On their own, each flavour is quite mild but the combination of light florals, apples and pears makes for a big flavour profile. The triple distillation makes for a brilliantly smooth whisky (as you’d expect).

This time, let’s try their lighter side – a triple distilled, bourbon matured, smooth and light whisky – The Hazelburn 10 year old. Distilled three times to ensure a light, fruity and flowery malt that is the hallmark of the Hazelburn brand. Hazelburn is one of three styles of single malt made at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown. While the bulk of the distillery’s output is concentrated on producing the Springbank malt, 10% of its production time is dedicated to creating the heavily peated Longrow, and a further 10% to the triple-distilled Hazelburn. Palate: A lovely and rich whisky with vanilla and honey flavours, liquorice follows with a refreshing zestiness.

I do also take a small bit of pleasure in winding up a few Scottish folk who ‘cannae get thur hawns’ on a bottle especially with my ill-gotten reputation of not actually liking anything from Springbank. A score of 3 out of 10 on a previous Springbank 15 will seemingly haunt me until the end of days, although I was only barred temporarily from the IAAS. Year Old: With hints of vanilla oak, sea spray, and fruit, this whisky is matured in American oak barrels before bottling. The nose is full of nice sweet barley, vanilla, unripe peaches, apricots, some waxy almonds along with gentle spices.Victoriana: Finished in charred oak and bottled without filtration, the Victoriana is a smooth whisky with a subtle wood and vanilla flavour and smokey aftertaste.
