Recordings are made to microSD/SDHC card as either linear PCM WAV files for higher resolution, or in MP3 format to maximise recording times. The included XYH-6 microphone capsule allows X/Y audio capture, whilst other optional and interchangeable audio input capsules provide a number of differing audio pickup patterns. If you need a basic mic that beats the mic embedded in any camera out there, including the really good ones like Canon EOS 250D, Canon EOS 80D, Sony Alpha 7S III, or such, then H2n will deliver nicely. The XYH-5 X/Y microphone capsule included with the H5 provides two matched unidirectional condenser microphones set at a 90 degree angle. I prefer the quality of the Zoom H5 preamps over any USB interface I tested up to this point, but that is because I also find it more handy, as usually I’m not filming with my computer turned on, and I want to avoid using something like an iPurifier or iDefender from iFi too, as it would complicate my setup if recording. I used to get a far better battery life out of it while using it with only the XY mic, while I noticed it eating a lot more power using an XLR mic like the Rode NTG-2. This can be done from the menu of H5 too, and I find it to be a really handy feature for microphones like NTG-3B. Four rotary controls and associated 0 to -20dB pad switches give the ability to adjust to the correct input level for channels one to four. inch, 320x240pixel colour touch screen enables the user to access menu options and functions including tuner, guitar lab for effects processing when connected to a PC or Mac, and three main recording functions – Field app, Music app, and Podcast app.
