Vince Gilligan originally conceived the project as a minisode titled "63" that would have been produced for the series' 10th anniversary as a gift to fans, acting as a final 63rd episode of Breaking Bad, but was soon developed into a full episode and then feature length film, to more effectively make use of the cost of assembling a cast and crew. Breaking Bad's final episodes see Walt's delicate secrets come crashing down. Walter White and Heisenberg are revealed to be the same person, and he has to flee New Mexico. In the episode "Ground State," Walter is shown hiding under a new name. This name is itself an easter egg. Reflecting on Howard’s character, who was initially set up as ‘Lord Vader’, Fabian said the character actually had “decency” about him. Fabian added to Vanity Fair: “So I’m just disposable. I’m a fly. He needs to talk to Jimmy and Kim right now. Who’s this guy? Get out of the way.” This complete box set, meanwhile, has the usual making-of featurettes and commentaries, which largely focus on the dull mechanics of making the key episodes, rather than providing any insight, as well as the slightly irritating and widely leaked "alternative ending", suggesting it was all a bad dream by Cranston's Malcolm in the Middle character, Hal.
