We have used our Synmat 7 UL air pad for nine months of camping at the side of the road, in car parks, garages, spare rooms, storage rooms, bed rooms and park benches.We protect ours with a very thin (2mm) foam sleeping pad underneath. We had one slow puncture in Iran, six months into the trip, that was fixed with the puncture repair kit included with every mat. I just had to put some glue on, let it dry, and repeat twice. I’ve had no problems since. Next-to-skin comfort and anti-slip GripSkin honeycomb-pattern coating. Laminate is air tight and impervious to hydrolysis. I’ve been using the Ultra-light (UL) series of Synmats and Downmats since they were brought out a couple of years ago, and I still use them as my first choice today. The Hyperlite and its lower minimum temperature brother ‘Winterlite’, build on the UL series technology and evolve the concept for light weight comfortable sleeping mats. Please note that inflatables such as sleeping mats are not considered as faulty if they become punctured during use and are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty in this event. A honey-comb embossed slip resistant 75D honeycomb embossed polyester is used for the top of the mat and the base is made from plain weave 75Dpolyester, both fabrics have a TPU Polyether film, hydrolysis resistant laminate film to prevent air loss and stop water ingress. The weldedIbeam chambers are filled with 150 gm2 of Texpedloft microfibre to provide exceptional insulation down to -11 C. The insulation is laminated to the upper and lower sides of the mat to ensure optimum loft and insulation for the life of the mat. The face fabric has a soft next-to-the-skin feel and is also slip resistant. A proprietary Exped lamination is completely airtight and impervious to degradation. Exped are so sure of their manufacturing quality that they give this mat a 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship. Inflation is via flat valve technology and can be done by mouth in about 1.5 minutes, but we recommend either a Schnozzel or Schnozzel PumpBag for hassle free instant inflation without introducing moisture to the filling. I consider that there are three broad categories of camping mat: foam, self-inflating and inflatable (see my comprehensive Comparison of Camping Mats article for more on this). This gives you a variety of options for inflation. We’ve more or less used all of the different inflation options so can give an overview of how effective each is… Blowing up with mouth/lungs Inflation is simple using the integrated hand pump that is a doddle to use and has an ingenious method to adjust the firmness (watch the video). Separate inflation and deflation Flat Valves sit nice and flat against the face fabric so they are far less susceptible to damage. The hand pump is fast and efficient and far easier than blowing up the mat yourself with the added advantage of not introducing moisture into the mat that could freeze and dramatically reduce the mats performance.

The rectangular shape offers a bigger space to lie on in comparison to tapered mats – though many of those will be lighter to carry for that reason. It’s also worth noting that those who tend to move about in their sleep should find the lengthways tubes on this mat will work to their advantage. Mats with a widthways tube construction, like the Therm-a-rest NeoAir, tend to drop at the edges when too much weight shifts there, whereas the SynMat will stay firm.

Offering increased levels of insulation over standard self-inflating mats the Exped Synmat 7LW sleeping mat has the same makeup as the ever popular Downmats, only microfibre fill replaces down in each chamber. We first tried the small foam Exped Mini Pump. This is just like a big round sponge that you connect with a small hose and repeatedly squash the air out of to inflate the mat. It’s simple and easy to use but takes a long time to inflate fully. It can be quite frustrating, hunching over the pump for five minutes unable to make it work any faster as you have to wait for the sponge to refill after each compression. If you’re not familiar with the SynMat family of inflatable sleeping mats by Exped, the main thing to know about them is that they make for very useful lightweight and comfortable options for cold weather camping. That’s all thanks to their unique construction where lightweight synthetic fibres are laminated to the walls of the inside to protect you when you’re lying on cold ground.
