About this deal

The helmet was made of polished steel with brass comb, a black mane, a black cow-hide turban, black visor edged with brass, a red plume in a small brass socket on the left side, and brass chin scales. In 1812, the cut of the coat was changed into a coatee that included short tails, a blue crowned N on the turnbacks, and the lapels fastened down to the waist and cut square. The cut and colour of uniforms were used for identification from afar by the generals directing battles from strategic viewpoints, but at this point in time were also given an extraordinary level of detail in facings, laces and buttons, which carried never-ending intricate differences to denote regiment, rank or division. Dark blue coats with white lapels piped red, crimson facings (collars, cuffs and turn-backs) with blue cuff flaps piped red and yellow lions on their collars. The same dress was used for the Foot Dragoons but with brass drums with blue hoops instead of trumpets.

The uniform of the light cavalry (or chevau-legers) of the line consisted of a green coat with turnbacks and lapels of the regimental facing color, which could be crimson, red, blue, pink or yellow. This book is fascinating both from the historical point of view and for the military figure modeler point of view. In 1808 some regiments were issued with French style shakos, including La Romana's division de norte. All in all it is a very good, well written piece but if you are only interested in the Napoleonic wars, this will not be so good. They often retained the queue, which used to be common to all soldiers, after other regiments had dispensed with it and adopted short hair. This is the Waterloo period Coattee for the 60th Rifles, this one was made for The Royal Greenjackets Regimental Museum but we also make many of these for re-enactors and collectors all over the world. It includes full-page colour illustrations of the Household Cavalry, the Heavy Cavalry (Dragoon Guards and Dragoons) and Light Cavalry (the Light Dragoons and Hussars). In 1815, crested helmets with black manes (red for trumpeters) were introduced but not completed, so the Gendarmes d'élite fought their last campaign with mixed headgears.

Highly recommended for all serious students of the Napoleonic army and of military art and costume during the period, 1798-1814. Spain was just one of the many countries which resisted the expansion of the French Empire under Napoleon I. Raised from sailors of the French navy who had distinguished themselves, the battalion of Marins wore a distinctive, elaborate uniform resembling that of the hussars. When France became a republic, musicians wore various types of uniforms to distinguish them from other soldiers depending on each colonel's imagination. A faithful copy of the Regimental Pelisse made in best dark blue military grade wool with black russia lace and black wool covered bosses. The embroideries on the turnbacks were a combination of a bugle and a grenade to signify Chasseurs of the Old Guard. Many of these images will have been seen before, but probably not all between the covers of a single book, however a significant number are from often underrepresented troop types. New for 2018, a new style of flap - with side tabs and a waistband, which makes them more period correct. When he became First Consul and later Emperor, Napoleon eschewed his general's uniform and habitually wore the simple green colonel uniform (non-Hussar) of a colonel of the Chasseur à Cheval of the Imperial Guard, the regiment that often served as his personal escort, with a large bicorne.
